NullReferenceException after installing mod

I'm trying to install a mod for SV for the first time. The mod is Stardew Valley Expanded. I downloaded SMAPI and then downloaded the SVE file into my mods folder in the game folder. But when I start the game it says there is a NullReferenceException. Could somebody please tell me how to fix this?
