Windows Multiplayer fishing glitch

Me and my friend have been playing a multiplayer game for a while without any issues until today. We just unlocked ginger island, I went over and started fishing. First few times everything was fine, the next time I cast my line the mini game didn't come up. I was just stuck. I couldn't stop fishing, couldn't open the menu, or do anything. I had to force quit my game and restart.

I thought it was just me but my friend is having the same problem. Anyone got any ideas for a fix?
