Moth appreciation

While looking for some Grashopper photos I found this one of a beauty sitting at our door... It's called Phlogophora meticulosa (Achateule) or "cabbage looper" says Wiki...

It's wings remind me of the kind of dried tree leaves that are crunchy and fun to walk through

Yeah, and they look really pretty when they spread their wings

Sometimes I wonder what Mother Nature was thinking when she made moths so pretty—after all, you often can’t even see them in the dark. Hmm, well, a few creatures will notice them, but I wonder if they’ll appreciate such beauty?

I didn't know potatoes grew in mid air! Now I know I didn't pay attention in school but I'm pretty sure they grow on the ground like pumpkins, right? Or are they harvested from the sea, I forget...

Growing potato trees is my new favorite hobby! There used to be pears, but I moved them into the ground and got earth apples.
We call topinambur AKA earth apple "earth pear"
I never tried to grow urchins on trees, but maybe sea potatoes are a good next step. Any other potatoes I should try?

Yes! I looked at mods and there are mostly just buttefly replacements, but a horsemoth would be great
Couldn't find an actual horse moth, but here's a horse chestnut moth. Close enough

I can definitely see this moth as inspiration for the future SDV horsemoth :)

I don't think they do, they would need a mirror behind them to do so. And has anyone already figured out yet, if they have self-reflexion or not? Just like ravens have or magpies, when they see themself in a mirror, they kinda know that the bird they see is them...

I don't think they do, they aren't in the list of animals who recognize themselves in a irror and generally said to be not very smart.

We know that insects at least have consciousness, and ants have passed the mirror test. It's hard to say for sure with moths, but with a lot of other animals I don't think we gave them enough credit for how smart they really are, so it's not totally impossible that moths could have some self-recognition.

Fair. I guess everything should have from what we know so far correction. Would be cool to see some moth studies, both about this and not.

It would be! Maybe one of us will find some soon...

Not about moths, but I remember seeing a video about how butterflies remember things from when they were caterpillars. The experiment was done by a little boy who raised butterflies, and he wanted to know if they could remember him. I dunno if they remember people specifically, but they can remember foods and situations that could be harmful to them. I believe it's generational as well!
