Moth appreciation

My friend's class did this thing where they used moth larvae as class pets, and when she took them home they started forming their cocoons and I got to see. I swear some of these moths are cuter than actual butterflies. I'm not a big fan of bugs and insects and spiders (eurghh!) but moths are something I could get into. I live in Australia so there are a lot of bugs but I've only ever seen the 'stereotypical' moths. I have, however, seen countless species of snakes and spiders. And a lot of other animals. At a school camp I held a children's python and it was so cute! And it's scales were so smooth.

I don't like moths.

They are currently eating my clothes.

You squash them, chuck them into bins, murder them and their children. I think that gives them every right to eat your clothes. And if you wanted to cooperate with them, leave out some old clothes you don't wear anymore and form an alliance with these beautiful creatures.

Absolutely not. But I don't go that far with them...I reserve that treatment for parasites. If possible I'll let moths out, but they're such fragile creatures and it doesn't always work. Some moths are really pretty, like hawk moths and others, but parasites? Those devils spawns I truly will do all of the above to. Starting with mosquitos and working my way through the list down to bed bugs and tape worms. All parasites can die. Especially Holly. Don't confuse parasites with symbiotes though. And don't forget to take your probiotics

Idk if they have hawk moths in oz, but in parts of America and elsewhere we call their caterpillars "tomato worms", and they're like these gigantic green caterpillars. They're pretty incredible, but yeah they love tomato plants

Yeah! A Tomato Hornworm is the best caterpillar I've ever found in the wild, found it amongst Mom's tomato plants as you'd expect. However I got greedy (a good thing in this case) and traded it for a Cecropia moth caterpillar. You may ask: why trade caterpillars? Well the intent was always for it to pupate and go all fuzzy moth. So I traded the potential of this:

Now THAT is a Real Pet™.

Furry moths are the best moths. Too bad their scales fall of if you pet them. It's not dust, it's moth skin that fluffs off of them.

Met this little guy today first time, resting in our Greenhouse on a cucumberplant - it's called "Russian Bear" a partly day active moth...

All parasites can die. Especially Holly. Don't confuse parasites with symbiotes though.

I would also advise against confusing holly with mistletoe, which is actually the parasite. Wouldn’t eat the berrries of either though.

hmm...i thought mistletoe was the fruit of the holly plant for some reason...

My brother found this one today's morning
Its the red underwing and it does a good job hiding them, was a surprise to see all the bright colour.

The "russian Bear" has them too, they're a danger signal for enemies saying "don't eat me, I'm poisonous"

Aand that's not exclusive to moths. Not always, but often if something's bright and colourful it's either poisonous or tries to seem like it is.

That's the point, yeah... A friend of mine has these little colorful poison dart frogs in her terrarium—pretty little cuties, but you'd better not touch them without gloves

They were the first thing that came to my mind! Read about them in some encyclopedia, never seen one irl, but would be cool. I've never thought about keeping those as pets but with their great looks it makes sense.

I wouldn't like poisonous pets in my home neither. But she also has those creepy beasts like praying mantis and walking leaf...

People keep all sorts of things as pets. Personal preferences is.
Whether its good for both the owner and the animal is a different question.
Praying manitises are fun, I occasionally find 'em outside. Kind of hard to spot because of how much time they spend frozen in one position.
