Alright so this contains post-CC spoilers for Stardew Valley, you’ve been warned. I’ve just been thinking about this for several days now and I wanna actually share it with you guys and get a good ol’ LORE CONVO going. Keep in mind all of this is my own opinion and definitely not confirmed or supported in the game.
So, most people know the “Abigail is the Wizard’s daughter” theory, but if you want a TL;DR it’s the implication that Caroline and Wizard had an affair and that’s where Abigail came from. It is not confirmed in the game by any means, but of course there are strings of detail in the game that imply such.
I’ll start off by saying that the “Abigail is Wizard’s daughter” theory is totally fine and you are welcome to believe whatever you want in the world of SDV; it’s very malleable and ripe with rich characters and fun storytelling. However I’ll lay my full bias out, I’ve never been a fan of the theory and I think there are much more interesting routes to go. So, here’s what we know:
- Pierre has dialogue concerned that Abigail might not be his daughter
- Abigail says her hair is dyed, it used to be chestnut brown (possibly pierre color) but that she hasn’t dyed it back in a long time
- The Wizard has an ex wife, who is the Witch (seen in the game as the one who curses your slime hutch and coop)
- The Wizard said he made a mistake that caused the divorce with his ex wife and sent her into an uncontrollable rage, cursing the countryside
- The Wizard says he might have a daughter in the valley, but he could be mistaken (”it’s rare, but it does happen”)
One thing I think people often miss is that the Wizard’s tower and the Witch’s hut are connected by a portal in the basement. You can activate the portal after the post-cc quest-line (which wasn’t in 1.0 but lore is fun!) and in the basement is a statue that changes your appearance (usable after getting Wizard to 4 hearts). Has no one wondered why both of them have access to something that can do that?
What if the Witch disguised herself as someone else, already wicked as she is, and tricked/seduced the wizard as someone else to see if he was faithful? Or maybe she was jealous of a connection in the town that wasn’t there and made it even worse. I have no doubt the Wizard would blame himself for this, for having a moment of weakness or to blame himself for falling for his ex-wife’s trick.
The Wizard and the Witch have a toxic relationship, one built on passion, desires, and jealousy; both of them. Both of them have made mistakes, both of them have grudges against one another, and both of them still think about each other (implied by Wizard asking the farmer about if the Witch was with anyone in the hut). It’s just that one of them had to move on, and the other one, as far as we know, hasn’t been able to. Of course, I don’t know much about the Witch, so take it with a grain of salt. She could have more sense than the Wizard! But not that much sense, both of them are dummies for having their HOUSES CONNECTED BY A PORTAL but that’s just me, maybe it was in their divorce papers or something
Little things like this just convince me that the “Abigail is Wizard’s daughter” is a red herring. There’s some evidence, yes, but there’s other pieces too, and I think if Wizard has anyone in town as his daughter, I think Caroline is the better bet. I don’t have much to support this, but I’ll still give my (very speculatory) case:
Caroline is obsessed with normalcy and the weird stuff she does have, she keeps to herself. She’s a very quiet, booksy person and stays in her lane. She has no visible qualms with Pierre (but I could be wrong) and instead puts a lot of her attention on being strict with Abigail, who has a fascination with magic, fighting, and of course, the Wizard (being near his tower in some seasons).
She is literally the exact opposite of Abigail, and that’s exactly why I think she’s the better candidate. She KNOWS that lifestyle and knows it’s dangerous; she’s seen what her parents have done, and she’s not going to be involved, let alone let her daughter get into that mess too. I think it makes sense for Abigail to have a natural curiosity for someone who might be her grandfather, but of course this evidence can go anywhere.
Another theory is that the Wizard’s “mistake” is completely wiping his memory, or wiping his family’s memory. But I’m tired I typed a lot y’all got all this i’m goin to bed
Also her hair is green
Thank you for reading this long post! I had fun typing it, hopefully you had fun reading it.
