You don't have to delete the quest, just use staircases to make the wearable versions and give him a pair of those instead, they work.
Keep the originals as you can only get one of them wereas you can get infinite of the wearable type.

Thanks! I forgot that glitch still works after others have been patched out. It's unlikely I'll remember when I start yet another save as I have 2 I'm actively playing through as it is, but there's always hope.
