How do you name things?

I'll usually just write the first thing that comes to mind, I don't really use the generator even though I've seen it giving some pretty unusual names.
Or I have a little pattern going on but it doesn't really mean anything other than an attempt at some terrible puns
But I don't really think there's any reasoning behind the names I use..
I called my dinosaur Nancy lol

I always use the random generator. I click through and sooner or later a name that's just perfect pops up, every time. For instance, suddenly I had a black chicken, which I didn't really like. But "Kona" popped up, which is also the name of a kind of coffee from Hawaii, and now that's her name. So now when I look at her, I think of black coffee and she's special to me. :)

I pick silly names that make me laugh, like my little brother came up with "thicken" and "chonkus" for 2 of my chickens (then my barn animals are named after the 7 deadly sins and the horsemen of the apocalypse)

I always name my animals after villagers, and my farm, well- pretty much anything that pops into my head! My most recent was "Bright Croc Farm," for no particular reason.

I try to come up with cute names. Usually I use characters from movies, other video games, animes, or I randomly come up with a name.

In history, names have always existed to describe something, they were never just strings of letters to make a cool sounding word, they all meant something, names like Catherine originated from ancient Greek and are supposed to mean purity. In the Middle Ages is when last names started to pop up, such names often were what the person did for trade, names like Hunter, Smith, Fisher, Tailor, Shepard and Miller, all come from that time, and what also came from that time would be last names that come from one's father, if you were the son of a man named Jack, chances are that your last name would be Jackson, the same goes for names like Nickelson, Johnson and Richardson, This is not only the case for human names but also city and settlement names, A lot of names for things in North America are English, Spanish and or French renditions of Native American names, cities like Chicago are named after what the Native tribe around the era called wild onions, Shikaakwa was the word and the French settlers hearing this eventually had it find it's way to the city name, Chicago. Toronto is the named after what the Iroquoian called the land as Tkaronto or "Place where trees stand in the winter" Mexico city, and Mexico itself was named after the Mexica people who lived there (Pronounced, Me-she-Ka)

In Stardew Valley I tend to name my things after real people and places in history, and to what names best fit the thing I'm naming...sorry about the long ramble.

Oh, that's really cute!

Lmao, that's such a drastic difference.
Occasionally I will name them something space related. My horse is always named Apollo
Oh there are a lot of good names that are space related. Is there a particular reason for Apollo?
I usually use puns or play on names on what they are, or just silly... my cows just have stupid names
Well... my cows are named Milka, MOOstang, MOOnie and so on...
My chickens named chuckee, EGGs Benedict, EGGspert and so on...
Puns are a lot of fun.

Like historical figures?

My names tend to either be based on the animal or ridiculous sounding old lady names. All my (regular) chickens/ducks are named things like "Harriet" or "Debbie," while my void chickens have ridiculous ones like "Void Boi". The goats and sheep are all puns, my favorite being "Van Goat". I named my one bunny "Ruby" after the children's books "Max and Ruby". And then my cows... are all named after members of a kpop group called MamaMOO. It was just too fitting, I couldn't resist.

Like historical figures?
Aye, Although to be fair, most of the animals I name in the game are named after the real-life counterparts that I own in real life, but the historical figure thing is still there, for example, two of my chickens In real life and in Stardew Valley are named Grant and Lee, named after the two most important generals in the American Civil War, Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee. I also have three other chickens named London, Paris and Rome, as that is what I think is the main European city trio.

Like Shane and Chicken Shane?
Not quite, but now that's what I wanna do!

I mean like taking a villager (Shane, for instance) and thinking of a similar name or word - so maybe Shane's chicken is Sean! Or Penny's is Dime, Abigail's is Gale or Abby, and so on!

The random name option still has it's perks. The names are pretty funny and even flipping through those a couple times could give you an idea

I sometimes with the random generator on the name selection screen -- I'll pick something cute, words in other languages I speak/learning, or just make puns as names!

I am not the least bit creative. So my chickens are: Donald, Daffy, Daisy and Goofy. My void chicken is Darth. Cows are Clara and Belle. Rabbit is Thumper (I had a real one named that as a kid). My dinosaurs were harder so I looked up real dinosaur types and used the first part of their type for the name. So Tyra and Tricer. As for my cat, I used one of the many nicknames I use for my cat, in this case Furbutt.

It's fun to see what other people do!
