Windows [HELP] Rusty Sword/Initiation Quest Missing

I recently started playing the latest version of the game in a singleplayer world and entered the mines. I got the normal dialogue from Marlon up until he gives me the sword. At this time, my inventory was full and I couldn't accept the sword. I was also unaware of my ability to trash items. I clicked out of the "gift" (?) screen and there was no dialogue that followed. I avoided the mines because it appeared I lost the sword I thought was necessary to get in. I went in recently because of a need for copper and nearly died fighting a slime. I looked up ways to get the rusty sword back, and found that I was missing a quest. I do not have the Initiation quest. I have no way of getting to Marlon unless I wait for a festival, which doesn't seem very feasible for me at this moment. The only quest I have related to the mines is the one where I need to get to mining level five, I believe. I may be mistaken, but I know that it is not the Initiation quest. Is there any way for me to start this quest or get the sword back? Do I have to wait for Marlon to appear at a festival? (Although, when I spoke to him at the Egg Festival, his dialogue had nothing to do with the quest, and I could only speak to him once, so I'm not sure if the festivals are a fix at all). I would also highly prefer to not start over, it feels like it's taken me hours to get to day 20 of spring (':

You have to reach level five to start the initiation quest.

Use the scythe as an improvised weapon, it's not much worse than the rusty sword. Destroy all crates and barrels as they have a chance to drop better weapons.
