Gray/brown mine levels

I freely admit that the rng does not love me. So it seems to me that these levels serve no useful purpose. The loot is terrible, and the floating heads rarely, if ever drop any loot (at least for me). I can remember only 2 occasions since these levels were introduced that ai received anything useful. I am not counting oak resin, of course.

What am I missing? Why were these levels introduced? Also it seems the height of bad manners for these to spawn on “happy” days.

They're just another form of infested floor like a slime infested floor.

They were introduced ages ago in 1.4 alongside the quarry which has a dedicated 'quarry dungeon' type mine which rewards the player with the golden scythe
