Games that everybody loves ... except you

The title is pretty much self explanatory. Are there any games, that are widely beloved, that you never could get into yourself? Now, this thread is not meant to be rude towards these games and their communities. But my oldest daughter and I got ourselves Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom a few months ago. And when I tried it, it never really clicked with me. It was just too complex when it came to the controller and buttons. And the building mechanic is revolutionary, no doubt. But it was never fun for me and always felt like a chore. Today my daughter and I talked about it. And somehow I always suspected that she has already beaten the game. Yet it turned out, that she never really finished the tutorial (just like me). That got me thinking: which other games were out there, that everybody loves and that check all the boxes with me, yet never really got me hooked. Turned out, there were quite a few. From Ghosts of Tsushima to Civilization 7 and even Doom Eternal. All of these games are great, but they could never really hook me and lost me after a couple of hours.

So, what are your games, that you never really could get into? And why?

And again, this is not meant to discredit those games. I just thought that it is an interesting topic and everybody is entitled to their own opinions.

Minecraft. I just have no idea what I’m supposed to do there.

I mean, I can mine down until I get to the base level, or until I find a cavern. Or I can craft a map and try to fill it. And hope that I can find my way back, because maps are tiny on mobile screen and how am I supposed to remember where everything is? But it all feels pointless and as soon as I put it away I have no desire to continue. Then I pick it up a couple of months later, start a new world, play for a few hours and repeat.

I'll second Minecraft. Never got the appeal. I love Terraria, so I should like Minecraft, right? But nope. It just seems so boring to me.

To a lesser extent, Undertale. I did actually play through it once (kinda forced, as someone was watching me stream it), and it was alright, I guess. I certainly didn't get the level of hype that everyone else that played it seemed to have for it, and I certainly have no desire to ever play it again.

Crysis
GTA V
Skyrim
Witcher 3
Cyberpunk 2077
Terraria
Final Fantasy VII
Fallout New Vegas

The list is nigh endless, this is just what I can think of right now. And yes I've installed and played a few hours in all of them, they simply fail to grab me. However I've had that happen to other games, tried again and ended up enjoying and finishing them. So there's always hope.

I just started Fallout 4 yesterday, it's great so far!

And then there are games I'm having heated arguments with about whether I'll finish them, even though I've sunk a lot of time in already:

Assassin's Creed Odyssey
Red Dead Redemption 2
Morrowind
Hellblade
Plague Tale Innocence
Last of Us Pt. 1
Jedi Fallen Order
Doom

I like them and they're fun until I get stuck somewhere. So I just play Stardew or Minecraft or a few other open-ended games instead LOL!

Thats kinda interesting, since its vice versa for me. I loved Minecraft, but never got into Terraria. I really enjoyed the graphics and especially the soundtrack. But after just a few minutes I already didnt know what to do. I had the same issues with Minecraft though. So I can relate to you and @Ereo

For me the fun with Minecraft started when some of my buddies bought it too and we played it in Multiplayer. We just made our own challenges. We build a Mordor'esque tower for ourselves and an underground railway, that connected one end of the map with the other. Including a glass tunnel that lead through the ocean. It was fun ti get the raw materials and keep us fed with food, etc. Thankfully we had different aspects of the game that we enjoyed. One was our farmer, the other our explorer and so on. And we made our own little challenges like jumping down a mountain into a small puddle of water. Now that I write this I realize how stupid and boring this must sound, but we had a great time. Later both my daughters got into the game and we started building a village in which we would play hide and seek.

But I'll admit that most of my fond memories of Mibecraft came from multiplayer games with friends and family. But I thought that Minecraft was the perfect canvas for these "make-your-own-game" type of experiences.

I have some issues with Fallout 4, but its a great game that I spend literally hundreds of hours with. Even more then with Skyrim, Fallout New Vegas or Morrowind (to stick with the Bethesda games), though I will say that I enjoyed those games more then Fallout 4.

The debate you have with Assassins Creed Odyssey I know too well. I have the same problem right now with Assassins Creed Valhalla. I really enjoy it and I think that the story and characters are great. But its just too much. And after not playing it for a few months I just dont know if I want to start a new game or continue my old save file. Which always leads me to choose neither and watch a movie instead. Which is a shame, since I really think that Valhalla is great and the story deserves to be seen all the way through to the end by me. Maybe one day...

Same here. I see the appeal but I never had the energy to take on the high difficulty level. I suffered through Binding of Isaac, Bloodborne and Dead Cells. And loved every second of it. But Hollow Knight never really could hook me, even though all the ingredients are there.

Terraria. I love Terraria for nostalgic reasons, and I do enjoy it at times but I find a couple of things about it frustrating. It's crafting system makes me go insane.

Don't Starve Together, specifically together. I love DST for similar reasons to Terraria for nostalgia and good memories, but the large amount of the mechanics irritates me. I get it's kind of the point of the game, because the entire game is built on the idea of trial and error, but it's frustrating.

Minecraft, absolutely loved Minecraft back in the day, literally played hours and hours, but now I can't pick it up without feeling like I'm wasting time. Still a great game! It introduced me to the sandbox genre.

Littlewood. It's a small game! And for what it is, it's very nice. I played it once, got pretty far in the game, and I haven't touched it since. It got repetitive and left me waiting for more but more never arrived, haven't even done a second play through it's been so long.

I don't truly hate any of these games, they're all good in their own way, I can't really hate a video game, because I am very selective with how I buy my games. I have to want a game really bad before I buy it and I usually only get the games I know I'm decently gonna like.

I could definitely see it being a lot more enjoyable with friends/family playing with you. I'm just a solo player 99% of the time, so I've never had that experience with Minecraft.

And I guess I shouldn't have said it was boring. It just didn't hold my interest, is all.

This is the problem I have with Terraria. By all counts I should like this game and play it a lot but I haven't gotten the crafting and parts of the UI straight in my head. I remember this stage years ago in Minecraft but for some reason it's just not clicking. Again, I think it will some day but that appears to hidden an unknown time in the future.

Hopefully not in the past!

I have only played the first one so far.
I love the whole trilogy. The first one always reminds me of a Tim Burton movie. The second is "just" more of the same and the third has a completely different aesthetic, but it still carries the vibe of the first two.

That is normal.
I don't think there exists a game which everybody loves it.
Pick a game you are really into it.

Basically I focus on gameplay other than storyline/plot.

That is the reason why I love Breath of The Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

I don't like playing Persona 5, that sucks.

I gotta play them when I get the chance...

A Little to the Left. I played it because it's always cited as a similar game to Unpacking, which I adored. I found most of the puzzles' solutions to be obvious, with the others being tedious at worst. While I can see the similarities to Unpacking, it just failed to scratch the same itch.
