Gamepad problems on PC

This is going to be a long and rambling post, please bear with me. Mainly I want some outside perspective, if anyone has some creative solutions to my problem. I am trying to play multiplayer on PC using split screen. Since you can only have one keyboard input, I dug out my old bootleg PS3 gamepad for the other person to play. Turns out that the controller inputs are weird on PC. For example, the only way to use an item is by clicking down on the joystick, and it always cycles through the inventory places. Only 3 buttons seem to work: the left trigger (opens and closes inventory), the left joystick (movement), right joystick (left clicking). I downloaded many mods to try and fix this, also played around with steam settings.

Some of the changes in steam controller settings allowed me to assign buttons to keyboard actions. When I set up the square 🔲 button to map to M (open map) the "select" button opened map. Turns out that the buttons are completely wrong in their mapping. This is surprising because when I used a hardware testing website earlier ( https://hardwaretester.com/gamepad) it showed the correctly mapped buttons. Anyways, I mapped each button one by one to M in steam's settings, and found out which corresponding button turned the map on. I tried remapping everything to a sensible controller layout, but the cycling through inventory and 3 original weird actions didn't go away. So I attempted to map it to a keyboard layout instead and turned off gamepad mode in stardew settings, but that created two new problems.

1. There doesn't seem to be a keyboard/ mouse equivalent to moving inside the inventory. I can set my joystick to be the "mouse" but its extremely sensitive and hard to work with even at its lowest sensitivity setting.

2. The game doesn't recognize this as a second player but the host. :(

It there anyway to overide the gamepad action settings in Stardew without deactivating gamepads entirely? Or is there some other solution that im missing? Can two keyboards play simultaneously?
