Solved Full screen on macbook M1 (camera notch) cuts off part of game content

With full screen apps, mac seems to put a black bar of pixels to mask the notch - but stardew is true to full screen dimensions of the screen which causes the very top of the screen to become cut off, cannot see the clock/time

There's a workaround for that (should work in all apps). Quit Stardew Valley and then:

Find Stardew Valley's location, usually in the Applications folder
Right click Stardew Valley and select Get Info
Check the box next to Scale to fit below the built-in camera
Close that info window and start up Stardew Valley again.

I'm having the same problem. I tried what you suggested, but I can't find a check box for scale to fit below built in camera. Any other advice?

I'm also having this issue, but the option to fit below the camera is not showing up for me, probably because the Steam version isn't recognized as a proper app that can be directly launched. The GOG version allows me to check this box, but I'm unable to connect to a LAN game hosted using the Steam version (it tries to connect for a long time, then fails).

For Steam users, I found a fix at the platform level using this third-party "Say No to Notch" app. I just installed it and haven't played around with it much yet so I can't 100% vouch for it, but Stardew's title screen looks good to me now.

The app lets you toggle the camera "notch" on/off by reducing your mac's total screensize. Someone else recommended an alternative (BetterDisplay) as well, in case Say No to Notch breaks, but I haven't tried it. (source)

If you got your Stardew from GOG as a .app file then Lew Zealand's solution should work for you, so try that first. (My Terraria app had the same issue and I fixed it like this, for example.)

But for Steam's Stardew, other indie games, or unpackaged code that opens fullscreen windows, "Say No to Notch" seems like a useful tool to have around.

sorry for the necro but i found a solution for steam users that doesn't need 3rd party software and figured i should share it for anyone else who comes across this thread like me

(quick warning before we begin: if your saves are important to you, back them up first!!)

first, navigate to steam, find stardew valley, find the settings icon, manage > browse local files

this will show a "Contents" folder. copy this to your clipboard, and make a new folder. put it wherever you prefer (i chose Documents, but it works anywhere) and name it whatever you like, (i chose Stardew.app), but make sure it ends with a .app extension!!

next, you'll want to right click on the new Stardew.app (or whatever you named the folder/now .app in the past step) and press Show Package Contents.

then, you should paste in the Contents folder from step 2 into this.
almost done! you may want to check if this runs, it did work at this step for me as of writing this, could differ in the future.

finally, you'll want to go back to where you can see the app, and right click on the app and press Get Info.
in that window, you should find a "Scale to fit below built-in camera" toggle. turn that on.

congrats! you should now have a fixed version!

a few things to note before you go off on your merry way:

this may cause issues with your steam saves! i don't know what this could do, but it's not a bad idea to back up your saves first.

stardew seems to do an interesting thing when detached from steam like this - it runs another game, Spacewar, via steam. if you want to know why/what that is, google's free, but it's basically just stardew's way of using steam when it doesn't have a way of knowing if it can properly use steam, as far as i can tell

if you want to still be able to launch the game via steam, follow this guide and use the .app you should now have

this worked as of posting, on an late 2024 MacBook Pro, with stardew valley v1.6.15 build 24356

Hi, I’m back after trying @liora :3 ’s method and it worked perfectly — thank you so much!

But later I accidentally found another way to fix it without having to clone the game, so I thought I’d share it here in case it helps others:

1. Open Steam Big Picture Mode (icon in the top-left corner).
2. Go to your Library and select Stardew Valley.
3. Open Manage → Properties...
4. In the General tab, look for Game Resolution and choose a resolution that fits your screen. (I’m on a Mac M2 and used 2560x1600.)
5. Exit and restart the game.
6. Important: On the game’s startup screen, there’s an screen icon in the top-right cornerthat switches between windowed and fullscreen mode.
   • If the game starts in fullscreen, click that button to switch out of it.
   • Then, click on the green zoom button in the top-left corner of the Mac window to go fullscreen again.

After doing this, the game screen is no longer cut off!!
That’s what worked for me — I hope it helps anyone else facing the same problem!

p/s: If you’re playing with a controller and having issues with the mouse cursor not placing correctly in the game, this method can also help fix that. That’s actually how I stumbled upon it in the first place while trying to solve my controller issue, haha.
