yea this has happened to me and I'm Soo confused. the only sunfish that should come from the ocean is moa moa or whatever that fish is, and as far as I can remember, there is no such thing in Stardew valley

Sunfish replaces the first fish you hook if the one you got has a higher difficulty. The first fishing minigame you play is the only time you can get it from the ocean for that reason.

Fun fact, due to this, and since frenzies run a simulation of possible fish to catch in an area, you can get a sunfish frenzy in the wrong season/time/location if you still haven't caught a fish yet

Sunfish is almost always the first fish you catch. I’ve had exceptions on various playthroughs but it’s almost always the case. Fun fact you can catch exactly 1 Sunfish in Standard farm. After that only trash will appear. It’s been a long time since I chose standard, but it was that way in 1.5
