Fishing is fun

If you like catching high quality fish (i know i do, plus they are perfect for the Smoker machine), then make sure to learn the quality bobber recipe, unlocked from a later-game quest (big board south from major's)! And try to buy the Iridium rod from willy, as soon as possible!
That bobber is news to me, and it was actually just unlocked because I happened to do Willie's bug quest. Yay.

I rather like the bobber that makes it easier to haul in treasure chests without fish failing tho, and it helps with difficult buggers like octopus and suchlike too. But always nice with more options 👍

Fishing is even more viable now in 1.6 than you may think. You can make specific targeted baits for certain fish and beyond that you can actually smoke fish now too, which preserves quality and just straight up doubles value for the cost of a single coal. Not only that, but the smoked fish good is affected by both fisher/angler and artisan multiplicatively, so you can get a smoked fish worth 8.4x the plain raw fish value (4.2x the iridium fish used to create it), incredibly profitable on higher value fish where the profit margins make the coal cost negligible, catfish included.

I’ve always loved the fishing minigame. But I’ve liked fishing in older games as well (WoW and EverQuest, each in their respective day). It’s more active than casks of wine, or rows of kegs or dehydrators. But in it’s own way the active nature of fishing fires it’s own dopamine hit.

I mean, I won’t say I never swear at my screen, but that’s octopi for you.

I’m sure winemaking wins from strict minmax, in that you load up kegs and ignore then for days, load up casks and ignore them for whole seasons. And you can use that time for anything else.

a hard focus on smoked fish is very labor intensive, each day.

That said, there is definitely a point where money no longer matters. So, whatever makes you happy, even if that’s 20 barns full of rabbits.

Bro I suck at fishing
+ fishing buffs really really help. If you simply cannot fish at level 1 fishing, ignore it until you can cook up some Dish O’the Sea (+3 fishing). Or buy some Seafoam Pudding (+4 fishing) from Pierre at the Moonlight Jellies. That makes the first few levels a Lot easier.

the Training Rod works too, and is a solid option, but I’m too stubborn to use that personally.

Yeah I'm to stubborn too to use that like I bought it but haven't used it

Have to say that this ratio surprised me. But it makes sense I guess. Apart from tough cookies like the legendaries, octopus, sturgeon, lingcod, lava eel and suchlike, most fish are pretty straightforward to reel in when you get to high fishing levels. And we get those others on the line much more frequently. Suppose seaweed and trash counts too?
