A FARMER’S LIFE
A 100% UNOFFICIAL STARDEW VALLEY NOVEL
CHAPTER ONE
Hazel Ashford tapped mindlessly at her computer. Her job at Joja Co. was the most boring in the world. She worked 9 hours a day, writing emails, typing up documents that the managers wouldn’t even read, and coming up with new ideas to make Joja more money.
Today she had had enough. She opened her drawer to open the will her grandfather had left her. Hazel remembered his instructions: To open it when all hope was lost. It was her one shot to get out of this place. Hazel read it carefully:
If you're reading this, you must be in dire need of a change. The same thing happened to me, long ago. I'd lost sight of what mattered most in life... real connections with other people and nature. So I dropped everything and moved to the place I truly belong.
I've enclosed the deed to that place... my most prized possession. It's located in Stardew Valley, on the southern coast. It's the perfect place to start your new life.

This was my most precious gift of all, and now it's yours. I know you'll honor the family name, my girl. Good luck.

Love,

Grandpa

Stardew Valley. Hazel had never heard of it before. But she smiled when the will did not leave her money, but a fresh start.

The next morning Hazel woke up at 5:00am to catch an early bus to Stardew Valley. It was a long trip, and towards the end, the Wi-Fi cut out. Guess I am in the middle of nowhere, Hazel thought, but at least it’s a beautiful middle of nowhere.
The bus stopped at a small bus stop at around 10:00am. Hazel had been on the bus for 5 hours. If it was a normal day, she would have already started work, but today was not normal. An older man and a red-haired woman were waiting for her. “Hello, I’m Lewis, Pelican Town mayor,” the older man greeted her, “and this is Robin, the local carpenter.”
Robin smiled warmly and put out her hand for me to shake. It was covered in splinters, but I shook it anyway. Lewis told me that I should go and get some rest and start cleaning up the farm tomorrow, but seeing as it was so early in the day, I explored the farm a little.
It was hard scrambling through all the grime and debris, but I stumbled upon a shrine with a note left on it. The tattered envelope had my name on it, but the sun was getting lower, so I decided to leave it until tomorrow…

The sun woke me up rather rudely the next morning, at about 6.00am. The rundown cottage was a mess and quite tiny, but it wasn’t in shambles like the rest of the farm. I noticed a small, beige package laying on the ground. I opened it, and there were 15 parsnip seeds inside and a little handwritten note saying, “Here’s a little something to get you started. -Mayor Lewis”.
As I walked outside I saw an assortment of tools laying around. There was a pickaxe, watering can, hoe, scythe, and an axe. I frowned and picked up the hoe. There was barely any clear land to hoe, though. Then I thought it out and grabbed the scythe, and got rid of some of the fibers to clear enough space to plant the seeds.
That took me forever, I thought, I hope there’s nothing else to do. That was when I saw the mailbox. Ugh… more work. I grabbed the letter inside of the mailbox and nearly peed my pants when I read it: “Hello, Hazel! Welcome to the valley! Don’t forget to feed your chickens; I’ve left you some hay in the coop. -Marnie” Chickens? There were chickens?
I dashed through the dirt and grass to a small building with a wooden fence surrounding it. I leapt over the fence and opened the door to the coop. There were two little chicks inside. I decided to call them Polka and Dot, which is a little cringe, but it wasn’t like anyone was going to ask. I picked up the hay, and put it in the feeder. Polka and Dot rushed to eat their food, and I decided to tip toe quietly outside while they ate before they asked for more.

CHAPTER TWO
I walked into town, striding on the pavement, flaunting my overalls. Sure, that was basically saying I was an egotistical maniac, but I was proud of my fashion choices. A little blonde brat called Haley thought otherwise. As I was walking down the street, she looked at me with disgust, and when I went to say hi to her… let’s just say I was deeply offended.
When I saw a Super Saiyan kid practising kickflips nearby, I felt a lot more hopeful. Heh heh… he ignored me.
I walked into the general store, praying that whatever human beings inside were nicer than those two bozos. I saw a smiling man with glasses talking to a brown-haired lady about cauliflower. The smiling man turned his attention to me, and yelled, “Look! It’s Farmer Hazel!” I blushed at this sudden attention. Four pairs of eyes turned to me, and I shuffled my way to the counter, heavily embarrassed.
I whispered quietly to the man, “Do you sell any seeds?” The man missed the social cue to answer quietly and yelled EVEN LOUDER THAN BEFORE, “Of course! This is Pierre’s General Store! We have quality seeds, quality fertilizer, and quality service.” He winked at me and a purple-haired girl in the corner sighed and rolled her eyes. He then told me, “Second aisle. We only sell seeds that are in season, though.”
Took him long enough, I thought as I scoured the shelves for seeds. The store wasn’t very organised, and it took me an age to find the seeds I needed. But after endless searching, I exited the store with cauliflower and potatoes, as well as some bean starters.
I trudged back to the farm, my backpack heavy with tools and seeds. I painfully planted the new seeds and hurried back into town to grab a drink at the saloon.
The saloon was bustling with strangers, and the bartender urged for me to come over. He told me, “The name’s Gus. I’m the bartender and owner of the Stardrop Saloon. What can I get ya?” He smiled, grabbing a clean glass out of the cupboard.
“Erm… I’ll have a lemonade, thanks.” I didn’t want to get drunk on the first night, but I still wanted to order something so I wouldn’t seem rude. I sat down at an empty stool, but a grubby man sneered at me and stood in the corner, with Gus giving him frequent refills to his beer glass.
A woman with a mountain of curly blonde hair burst in, demanding alcohol, specifically beer. Gus kept reminding her that her tab was getting so large he’d have to stop serving her, but she grumbled and shrugged it off.
Once I finished my glass, I skedaddled out of that place before another drunken villager could enter.
I passed out the second I laid down in my bed, and my dreams were filled with chicks, beer, and my grandpa saying something about “three years”. Weird.
The next few days were the same, repetitive process: watering/harvesting crops, feeding Polka and Dot, clearing debris, and exploring town. The only exciting thing that happened was getting a fishing rod from Willy. Yay.
Until one day, I walked into town and stumbled upon a bright, pastel festival. I cursed myself for not keeping up to date while Robin and her second husband Demetrius explained the ‘Egg Festival’ to me. I thought I could just be here for a few minutes then escape back to the farm without anyone noticing I was ever there, but no, Mayor Lewis just had to invite me to join in for the egg hunt. The purple-haired girl from my first day in town was competing, and she had a determined look on her face, and two little kids were playing with their baskets.
I whispered to myself, “I’m gonna feel like such a jerk if I win.” But the purple-haired girl overheard me, and snapped, “If anyone’s winning today, it’ll be me, Abigail, egg hunter extraordinaire. I’ve won this ever since I was six.” I gulped, waiting for the starting siren to ring.
