Switch First pet disappeared with no way to replace her :(

I've seen similar reports before but couldn't find the threads again. My boyfriend and I play split-screen multiplayer together on Switch (version 1.6.15.3, game language English). Our first pet, adopted when Marnie came to our door, was a black cat named Sesame. At some point during Spring/Summer Year 2, Sesame disappeared. Unfortunately I don't know exactly when this happened because we didn't notice immediately -- we just thought she had wandered off to some remote corner of the farm. But after a few days (around Summer 4), we realized that her water bowl was no longer emptying during the day.

We put off getting a replacement cat out of sadness, but eventually decided (in Fall Year 2) to buy a new black cat from Marnie, which we also named Sesame. We thought that since we already had a pet bowl on our farm that seemed to no longer be assigned to a pet, the new cat would be able to use it. But over two in-game days since adoption, the cat has not gone outside once, and the pet bowl has not emptied.

I guess the old pet bowl is haunted by the original Sesame, and we'll need to get a new one if we want the replacement cat to be happy... but we really only wanted one pet, and we don't want an extra bowl lying around. Is there any hope of a bug fix in the near future that will let us get our old cat back? We miss her :(

And in another thread someone mentioned it happened to them when the witch flew over the coop, and the pets were inside the house of the guest player. The witch flew by us too, so that's what might have happened with us. Do you remember if the witch flew by at some point, around the time the pet disappeared?
