There are some super fun, weird, and downright whacky mythological creatures the farther you decide to go down the rabbit hole, here are a couple I learnt about ages ago when I did that very same thing, and honestly there are probably people with even weirder ones:

The Ashiaraiyashiki:

Basically a dirty foot evil spirit? Japanese folklore has some super random things like this, it basically just breaks into peoples homes and demands to be washed.

The wampus cat:

From the north american sphere, I basically have no clue what this is or was supposed to be, most of anything i've read about it just speaks about how it's a cat like creature, how large it is and how it shrieks, probably? a common theme with many of these creatures but who knows honestly.

One from my own country right now - Canada, and something I had story books about as a kid. It's effectively a human whose become the host to an evil spirit, preying on humans. There are actually a few different versions so i heavily recommend the source I linked from the Canadian encyclopedia, as it has a couple places you can read more

Also while I was looking for images I found this awesome site, has hundreds of these obscure folklore, hoax, mythological creatures

Wait Monty Python RIPPED OFF Japanese mythology??!?

I am SHOCKED by the sheer amount of cultural appropriation. The cultures coming from disgusting things living on the unwashed feet of course.

Jackalope.

It doesn't do anything.
No magic.
No unique power.
No questline.
No cool mythology.
Poorly represented in manga.
No deaths attributed.

And, well… it's mostly real and explained by science.

It gets reported looking like this:

But it really looks like this:

though more often it shows up on the sides of the face like this:

It happens after being infected with Shope papilloma virus which causes keratinous carcinomas on or near their heads. As usual Nature is as horrifying as our imaginations.

Oh, poor thing, does that hurt?

The first one looks a bit like the bavarian "Wolpertinger" 🤔

Interesting, I wonder if it could be the same thing? Not sure if it hurts but it cant be good as it spreads since it's a cancer (carcinoma) and eventually interferes with eating if it progresses too much.

It could be, nobody really knows what a wolpertinger looks like, sightings vary greatly because they are said to be very shy and the observers are usually at least a little drunk... The creature is usually described as a rabbit with antlers, sometimes with wings and/or bird feet. 🤷

they are a mythical Japanese yokai who is known for making mischief and playing tricks on mortals. they look like foxes, and the more tails that they have, the higher their status in the spirit world.
I love them because they remind me of myself: mischievous, misunderstood, and curious.🦊
