New chapter every 1-5 days. I haven't seen anyone else write a fan novel from the farmhand's perspective, and I'm bored. So, here goes. :shorts:

Chapter 1
Arrival

The abrupt halt of the bus jerked me awake. My worn work boots click-clacked on the flagstones as I disembarked, backpack slung over one shoulder. Waving goodbye to Robin and Mayor Lewis, I turned down the path that lead to the farmer's residence.

I had heard of this person. She was the town hero, monster slayer and absolutely minted, from what I had heard.
I was quite intimidated just by the thought of her, if I was really being honest with myself.
My footsteps kicking up lazy swirls of dust, I rounded the corner.
And saw the farm.

It was huge.

Built like a city, giant barns and coops lined the perimeter, while equally large crop fields where interspersed here and there, each with iridium sprinklers equipped with pressure nozzles.
Not a tree was to be seen as I walked further into the labyrinth. It was clear where the farmer's wealth had sprung from.
In the center of the whole thing were 4 towering totems, each depicting a different kind of natural landscape, and a huge golden clock.

Making my way to the farmhouse, I saw rows and rows of strange machines that where whirring, buzzing, clanking and emitting blue light. As I passed, one of them stopped whirring, and spat out a diamond. A real diamond!

"You can keep it if you want."
I jumped and turned around.
There stood the farmer.
Tall, with dark hair and angular features, she wore a crisp brown suit, dusty jeans that hugged her legs, and boots with gold buckles.
"I have more than I know what to do with."
I blinked. "What?"

She looked at me with a cool, calculating stare that made me shiver.
"You can keep that diamond" She said. "Consider it my gift. I'm Ellie, you must be my new farmhand."
She half smiled at me, showing a dimple, but it was gone as quickly as it had come.
I wanted to see it again.

"This is where you'll be sleeping." Said the farmer, or should I say, Ellie, pointing to a modest little stone cabin.
"Fully equipped with a kitchen, bathroom and everything else you'll need. Help yourself to the fridge." She walked off to the farmhouse.
I muttered my thanks and hastily stumbled inside. Sweating, I collapsed onto the bed. She made me so nervous.

Chapter Two
Dawn

The rooster crowed and I sat up. 5:00am on the dot. I groaned inwardly and started to get ready.
There were eggs and bread in the fridge for breakfast, and a coffee machine on the counter. I hurriedly wolfed down my sparse breakfast and made a run to the door.

Outside, the summer air was moist and thick in my lungs. I walked to the farmhouse to recieve my instructions.
Inside, Ellie was sitting on a couch in front of a huge plasma TV, watching the news. I coughed to anounce my presence, and she turned it off.

"Good morning.'' She said, turning to face me. She had on pinstriped pants and a shirt with a cat on it saying 'Meowdy!'
"I-I'm ready to recieve my first set of instructions." I stammered

Ellie laughed.
"Calm down. I'm not a drill sergeant. I want you to go into town and pick up some seeds, muscle remedy, and ingredients for tomorrow's breakfast."
That was fine by me.
"Oh!" Ellie exclaimed. "I forgot to tell you."
She leaned in close and whispered
"Don't ask too many questions."
What?

I left, still pondering the strange and cryptic warning.

In Pierre's General Store, I bought some melon, wheat, hot pepper, and tomato seeds, dropping off some of the crops the Junimos had gathered this morning for an ample sum.
I walked to the clinic to pick up some Muscle Remedy when I heard shouting and desperate pleading coming from the next room.

"-They're coming back for her! I know they are!"
"Ma'am calm down!"
"You have to hide her!"
"Ma'am please!"

Peeking my head around the corner, I saw a woman with striking green hair, pleading and screaming to a man about 40-ish with a brown moustache and horn-rim glasses who was trying in vain to calm her down.

"The men in robes! They're coming for my daughter!"
The woman had tears streaming down her face. I left, unable to drown out the sound.
What was going on?

Walking back to the farmhouse, shopping bags in hand, I decided that I would ask Ellie about it all.

Entering the room, I saw her in the kitchen wearing a pinstriped apron, stirring what looked like pale sludge in a large copper pot. I gagged at the sight.

Ellie turned around and, seeing my green tinged face, laughed.
"What IS that?" I asked, pinching my nose.
"It's algae soup." She said. "It tastes better than it smells."
"I hope you're telling the truth for both our sakes." I said, and Ellie laughed again. It was a bold, ringing laugh.
"You're funny, Farmhand." She said.
"I need to ask you something."
Ellie's smile vanished.
"What sort of thing?"

I took a deep breath.

"I saw a lady at the clinic with green hair, crying to a doctor about ''men in robes'' and how they were coming for her daughter. What does that mean?"
Ellie's whole body went rigid. Then she turned away and said, in a voice of cold fury
"What did I tell you about not asking too many questions?"
"I-I didn't ask-It was a sort of accident that I found out-"
Ellie's voice now raised to a shout
"You have to understand this, Farmhand!" She yelled.
"The people of Pelican Town are wary and paranoid! When a newcomer moves in, they do everything they can to keep their secrets, and they don't like it when the new guy is nosy. I learnt that the hard way."

Ellie took a deep breath, and resumed the stirring of her soup.
"I think it's best if you had an early night. It's your first day on the job after all."

Heart pounding, I left, knowing that I'd ruined everything.
