Was scrolling through CA's old posts on his developer blog and found this really early post about the mines. I've seen people talk about how portraits have changed but never stuff like this and I thought it was pretty cool. It seems pretty different from the mines we know today!

What's most interesting to me is that CA mentions procedurally generated content. It was scrapped, but I feel like you can still see those influences in how mines floors are randomly selected and staircases randomly appear - CA did a good job of making sure no 2 mines runs were identical.

There were different mechanics while mining too, you'd get bombs to blow up walls and move along much like how more modern games like necesse and corekeeper play, though with more of a goal of acting as a medium to get to more caves as opposed to the main mining source itself.
