During planning phase can you freely give each other items?

During the planning phase it says players may trade items, does trade here means swapping items, or can players just pass over items to each other freely?

My understanding of the rules is that "trade" in this case can include giving someone an item without receiving anything in return.

In this case, "trade" probably means swapping items between players, not just handing them over freely

Nah, I doubt it means strictly swapping items; that's the less practical option.

Trade is just the key word for giving another player an item. They don’t have to give you something in exchange unless their inventory is full and they don’t want to trash anything.
