Ducks can SWIM?

Yes, the same way, one can refill her watering can on the shores of the Beach Farm without killing crops, ducks also like salt water. The chemistry in Stardew Valley is a marvel !

I agree with Imnvs: ducks usually jump into the water when they are on the tiles next to the water body. Randomly.

This means, they don't decide to go swimming and then follow a path until the closest water. This is a random decision when they are next to water: if the game decides the duck has to move, instead of considering the water as an obstacle, it will make the duck jump into the water (maybe after a roll dice). And this is the same logic for jumping out of the water.

So if you want your duck to swim, you have to maximize their opportunities to be on the bank of the river/pond.
Yeah! I'm familiar with pathing and all that, though I've been figuring out a way to create fewer obstacles while also not disrupting the aesthetic. ie. maybe instead of an open gate, have an empty spot of fence and stepping stone path leading to the pond? They're quite close to it so hopefully, they'll hop in with some tinkering! I haven't played in a little bit with school stuff/job stuff/Elden Ring with my boyfriend but I'm looking to continue soon!

I have a Forrest farm, the cop is very near the water, the duck gets pats every day, but I've never seen them swim. What am I missing?

I don't fence my animals in, and instead use natural barriers to sort of contain them. I'd been using the river in my hilltop farm as one of the barriers to the pasture, and I laugh every time I see one of my ducks hop in the river and hop out on the other side. I see them do that all the time with that farm. Also my riverlands farm, where there's plenty of water for them to enjoy. I haven't seen them swimming much on my other farms, like my wilderness and forest farms even though I've got ponds that mark the edges of my pastures.
