Dual Profession Upgrade cards

Just needed a quick clarification regarding cards like Miner-Geologist and Excavator-Gemologist.
Having played the video game, we are pretty sure you have to choose one or the other (e.g. choose Miner or choose Geologist). We assume you can't have both active.
But we couldn't find a rule on point in the rulebook or on the forum.

You assumed correctly! On page 21 of the rule book, under Profession Upgrades:

If you gain a double-sided card, choose which side is up and therefore active.
