I had played this game A LOT, more than 30 times, lost the count already.
At the beginning, I remember that I struggled a lot to win, but when I started to get used to it, I won like 100% of the times, sometimes even before the winter starts! So I started to playtest a few things to try to get the game a bit harder because I love it, but playing an easy game is a bit boring, so I got this set of rules that is really challenging but yet beatable.
It's only recommended to the experienced players , only try it if you beat the original game by the rules first by the beginning of winter.
No more introductions, let's go:
1º Rule: No more "free" legendary fish
When setting up the game, if you get a legendary fish on the fish track, return it to the bag and pull another random fish tile until there isn't a single legendary fish there. I'm sorry.
2º Rule: More Joja
When setting up the game, separate all the season cards that contains JOJA symbol on it. Now, take 2 of then randomly from each season and 2 that doesn't have Joja on it to build the season Deck. This will guarantee that at least 8 joja tiles will appear through the game (could even be 9 if you are unlucky by pulling the winter double JOJA card )
3º Rule: Hardest Joja
Wait, there's more. Now to remove a JOJA tile, instead of simply paying a single heart or 5 coins, you have to pay that x number of players. For example, if you are playing with 4 players, to remove a JOJA you have to pay 20 gold or 4 hearts, or even could divide that, like 15 gold and 1 heart, or 10 gold and 2 hearts, and so on.
And you have to remove all then from the board at the end of the year.
4º Rule: Make the grandpa proud
Instead of having just 4 grandpa objectives, now you have 9 (exactly, 9!). You have to do the 8 objectives from the box, but also, had to have Happy Animals as well. The 9º objective is: “You have to get happy animals equal 2 times the number of players.”
5º Rule: Pet your animals
This is a bit complicated than the others because it changes the effects of a few things, because I feel like this action was almost never used because of those effects. The changes are:
Building Tile Silo: Before using the Pet Animals end of turn action, gain 1 heart token. (If you use the Pet Animals to make more than 1 animal to the happy side, remember that you only gain 1 heart token per end of turn action, not per animal! This allows the building to be a bit less powerful but yet very useful)
Event Card Needy Animals: Flip 1 animal of your choice to their happy side.
Item Card Heater: Discard during your turn to flip 1 animal of your choice to their happy side.
Note about solo player
I tried to playtested it alone with just one pawn, one tool and even mixing the professions, but it doesn't work very well. The balance of the game is a lot different when playing alone or with 2 players with this set of rules. There are even a few things that doesn't have effect when playing solo, so what I usually does is play solo controlling 2 characters, like different players, so each one have their own tool, profession, the pet wanders, and so on.
That's it. The rest of the game follows the original rules, so you have to complete the community center as well.
Please let me know what you think, and your feedback if you playtested it
If you found this too hard, you could soften the JOJA cards to have only 1 per season instead of 2, and play without the "9th" objective.
