Converting Game file from Single Player to Multi Player

I have a save file started on my own. I build enough cabins for 2 additional players.

I go to host multiplayer and only one player can join at a time, not both. They have their own console and game, connecting via multiplayer and join.

Thoughts?

When each of them join separately, are they able to create different characters that live in different cabins?

As Ereo stated, they each have to create a seperate character, one may be trying to click on the preexisting character. You can also try constructing another cabin and see if any issue lies in that aspect of the problem, though I'm unsure why it would.
