But what is the void? What would we do there?

The void, by definition, is composed of literally nothing. There is nothing to do. Why would we go there?

There are ways to travel to the void.
If Krobus comes to live with you, certain events, including his eviction, can cause him to slip into the void. If you zoom out far enough you'll see him in the blackness outside the farmhouse.
Sometimes your children and pets slip through the walls and into the void. Every third or fourth time I toss my toddler he pops into and out of the void north of the nursery.
And the final way to go into the void that I know of, in 1.4 and earlier. The spot where now exists a rock at the north of the railroad, which becomes unblocked once you achieve perfection. If you persist at entering this spot, trying weapons and tools and running, you could slip into the black space between. It goes from the north of the railroad down to the chasm by the quarry, with the skulls and bones.
There's nothing to see and nothing to do but the void is there and you could go into it.

I just like to extrapolate the possibilities of the game world based on what I see. I wouldn’t want this game to become Minecraft.
