I found a bug on Ginger Island. Basically, when donating to Professor Snail, I noticed I could select the 'Modern Table', when every other item was greyed out. When I clicked on it, the center top part of the animal skeleton lit up, and I was able to put the Modern Table into that empty slot. The table then popped in, and appeared to turn into the actual spine piece I was missing. Not sure if this works with other tables.
I do play with mods, however, none of my mods add any items to the game, so I don't think it's an issue caused by any mods. I play in English, and the save I was on was made a few years ago, in single player.
