professor snail

What am I missing here? It's been a long time. I would be grateful for any help.

So i completed everything for Prof Snail, but I can't seem to trigger the ending part of the quest and when I ask for hints he just says to fish...I've done both surveys and I believe all of the fossil. Is there something I'm not doing or is this a bug Thanks yall

Trying to do the Island museum and Professor Snail says that snake spines can be found on the western side of the island but I just keep finding snake skulls. Is this a bug or is there a more specific way to find them?
