Carrot cake, no contest. Chocolate cakes are great and I have eaten some fantastic ones but differenter is betterer and a cake made (nominally) from a root vegetable?

German Chocolate cheesecake is at least really high up there. I have a "Strawberry champagne" cheesecake which was splendid, though I didn't particularly notice anything champagny, it might be why it was even better than most strawberry cheesecakes (And strawberry cheesecake is a very good thing.)
For non-cheesecakes, I probably prefer a really good carrot cake or an angel food cake (As long as it's actual angel food and not misnamed white cake) over anything more traditionally cakey - though there are some really gourmet exceptions. I have had red velvet cakes that were genuinely velvety, on rare occasions, though too often I have met ones that seemed like chocolate cake with food colouring.
Sheet cakes of the kind often used for large scale events and occasions are 90% of the time the "Thank you for playing" of the dessert world.

Typically we have carrot cake for birthdays, but recently my kiddos have been requesting chocolate or red velvet cake. I err on the side of red velvet with cream cheese frosting if I had to choose to eat one of those aforementioned options.

This is one of my personal favourites too. I could eat a whole cake if it had the right frosting... so good.
I never much cared for carrot cake, I don't like carrots and I see no reason why they should make there way into a delicate and delicious dessert. However, I'm not saying that it's bad. I do like a good chocolate cake so as long as its not too rich. And its even better if it comes with ice cream.

I am completely bamboozled and befuddled by this. Have you ever been to a donut shop? Tim Horton's? Or like when someone brings a dozen donuts of different types in a box? There are the fluffy round donuts with holes, and the slightly less fluffy round donuts with holes, and the cake donuts are the less fluffy type. Sometimes they are chocolate or blueberry? Where the "glazed" or "raised" may have different kinds of frostings but are the same on the inside. I'm like, yes you do know what a cake donut is! I can't wrap my mind around it!
