Yeah, prismatic shards seem to be frighteningly common after the 1.5 upgrade (maybe just my seed). I enchanted everything and got a few rock candies, and still had 70 some in a chest before perfection.
The reason I prefer lucky lunch is it lasts longer, 2 spans a whole day even in SC, and Cucumbers reproduce at a rate of 1 every 2 days.
Also as you mention, this is usually late game. I have a crystalarium farm set up by then. Jade and Rubies are my first gems to produce. With Diamonds coming third and quartz last.
Eventually I work up to something like 34 Ruby, 34 Diamond, 66 Jade, and 140 Quartz.
