The Forge on Ginger Island

I’m wondering why you use a pickaxe much after accessing the forge.

bombs and ammo exist and are vastly superior.
Because I'm playing Stardew Valley not Bomberman?

I mean, could you? Sure. But it'd be a pain to keep it supplied. Either you're paying out the nose or you're burning the ores you're trying to collect, both are sub-optimal in my opinion.

Most of my mining isn't in the skull caves. In fact, I very rarely if ever bother with the skull caves. I'm more interested in making sure I have enough copper and iron for my next batch of kegs. If you were collecting iridium, I could see the point, assuming you needed that much iridium. But just for mining copper and iron? You're spending more than you're getting that way.

One of the great things about this game is its open endedness. You can prioritize almost endless different goals you choose to aim towards. I have sprinklers set up everywhere and except for the time it takes to harvest and plant spend my time deep diving in Sc for more gold, iridium, and the crystalariums I can make. The money from the things I grow makes the purchase of bombs from the Volcano dwarf very, very cheap.

I have need for very little copper and iron now. I don't understand what you need kegs for, but I understand that your goals are different than mine. Perhaps you can make more gold selling what you make with your kegs than I can with the crops I grow? It's all good. It's all part of the game. I don't even use kegs anymore. The Espresso I used to make from the coffee my kegs made I now get from the Desert trader with the diamonds my crystalariums churn out.

I have three words for you, my friend. Just three: Ancient Fruit Wine.

I'm making close to five million per season with a one day workweek. That's why I need kegs. Because I have literally hundreds of ancient fruit planted on Spring 1, having used the shrine in the sewer to switch over to Agriculturalist for the day on DSG. Heck, over a million of that comes from the greenhouse. No bombs, no crystallariums, just sheds of kegs and a field of ancient fruit.

And here I've just been selling fruit! Thank you!

Now if I can just find a good place to set up all those kegs.........

Big Sheds can hold 137 kegs with you being able to access them (provided you can access corners). Without accessing corners you lose 8 for 129.

I usually put lampposts in the corner. And sometimes I will put stuff waiting to go into kegs/jars in a chest inside the door too, but this will be one or two of my sheds and I have 10. This brings my total per shed down to 133 or 132 if there is a chest for storage.

Just so you know, kegs multiply the price (base price, quality doesn't matter) of whatever fruit you put in them by 3x, and vegetables by 2.25x. Jars multiply the base price of both fruits and veggies by 2x plus 50g.
So yeah, if you have the kegs and can wait a few days, it's quite a lot of free extra money.

Yeah, you could look at it like that, the game is played different by different people for a reason, I was just bringing up a point which makes sense to me and a lot of others.

I personally do sc runs for all ores I need as while you can get iron ore and coal faster by aiming for those floors in particular, you get copper in a larger quantity by diving instead.

You also get a lot more resources which serve as a much better baseline for ore collection.

Bombs just make everything faster and in turn help get more bang for your buck than just a pickaxe does.

Big Sheds can house over 120 of them each, making them very space efficient. If you don't mind a bit of inconvenience, you can stack them in the bus tunnel as well.
You can have them pretty much anywhere off the farm that doesn’t reset or have an npc walking over it that you don’t wish to trap.

You know you can buy bombs from the dwarf in the mines as well which is much easier.

You know, FG, your overall knowledge of this game is unsurpassed! The number of times you have come to these forums and helped people, like me, is close to uncountable. You must have a very good memory and many, many hours playing this game. Probably both!

Thank you!

Thanks so much, words like this make my day and keep me smiling for hours (no kidding).
If you ever have any questions do please ask and maybe I can help you, good luck.

P.S. I do have a somewhat good memory and a lot of hours :P

I agree with qaija, great thing is there are many ways to play and many definitions of "optimal". If you're using a bomb whenever there is a cluster of 3 or more nodes, you're trading a bomb (worth 600) for 6-12+ ore, worth 1500-3000+. More importantly you're getting the ore faster, and thus acquiring more ore in a day. Not that someone is necessarily trying to optimize for most ore acquired in a day, of course. Just saying, depending on your priorities, you're certainly getting something out of it, and definitely getting more than you're spending.

Yeah it’s a tradeoff, regarding potential profit too, it’s obviously harder to measure but some definitive things can be a monetary loss and a net gain.
