Mushrooms or Fruit bats?

I've had files with both, but I think mushrooms are just more profitable. I also just try and grow fruit trees as early as possible, and once I've done that I really see no need for a fruit cave. But it is personal preference.
I mean at the point where you are needing/wanting fruit trees 3 mushrooms a day isn’t going to do you any good.

The difference is negligible. A single chicken will produce more cash per day than either, on average, simply by making gold-star mayo. Therefore, I tend to go to Fruit Bats because it is more convenient to setting up the community center. There's nothing I actually care about from the mushroom cave. Gold-star cheese is much easier to mass produce than Life Elixir and produces better effects anyway.

I will probably get more enjoyment out of answering the question "where do ya want this road built" with "To the Bat Cave, Robin!" than the absolutely trivial amount of resources either cave will produce.

I sometimes go with the fruit bats, but overall I prefer the mushroom cave because it's the only place to get morels besides the secret woods.

I'm just imagining someone taking an entire jug of mayo and eating it all in one sitting while mining.

Personally I choose mushrooms cause I like routine in my runs, with bats I can't check every day you should wait till the end of the season really, and I enjoy the high health of purple mushrooms or I can enjoy life elixir pretty easily. The main complaint I seen was the fruit trees, Personally I like the ascetic they give my farm when I use them even if they aren't producing

If your argument for one cave over the other comes down to profit... you're quibbling over change when the real dollars are to be made. Fruit bats get you to making the dollars faster by getting the CC done more easily.

The only time i remember using the mushroom cave is during a multiplayer run with my buddies. It became obsolete after a mushroom tree sprouted up and just kept spitting out saplings.

I've used both in playthroughs multiple times; currently favoring Bats; mostly because I'm too lazy busy to check the cave every other day.
Also, Artisan (and later Fodder) bundle without Fruit Trees or merchant luck ist very nice.

Mushrooms are nice for energy though (also, Fall seeds from common mushrooms can be interesting)

This here is the key for me. If you are lazy but self-conscious about it, the accumulation of Fruit is an effective way to gauge your laziness and accumulation time by counting the empty floor tiles in the cave. But if you have Mushrooms, you are a slave to the regular Mushroom schedule and then feel the guilt associated with fear of missing out. How Many Morels Missed? is not my favorite parlor game. Bats vs. Mushrooms is all about personal psychology. What about yourself can you tolerate?

I can deal with the lesser guilt of a Bat Cave littered thick with fallen and maybe only slightly decaying Fruit (Bat spit is a natural preservative) because I can still pick it up after a month of forgetting which pair of shorts I left the Cave in. But those Mushrooms. I *know* I've missed tons of them, never to be seen again, having been dutifully harvested by local insects behind my back and shipped half a world away to be cultivated by grateful leafcutter ants. At least somebody isn't lazy.

I usually choose Fruit Bats, by doing so you are able to submit some of the fruits needed for some of the bundles (Enchanterer, Fodders, Artisan, Summer Foraging, and Fall Foraging) at the Community Center without having the need to plant the trees—you might also be able to complete the Community Center by the end of Year 1. You are also able to utilize these fruits by placing them into jars and kegs.

In addition, the star quality of these fruits also increases as you level up your foraging level. You are able to achieve this by choosing Gatherer (At Level 5, Chance for a double harvest of foraged items.) and then Botanist (At Level 10), by doing so, all of the foraged items will be a high star quality such as iridium star.

However, choosing Mushrooms is just equally helpful in completing the exotic foraging bundle. You are able to utilize the mushrooms into creating Life Elixirs, which give 200 energy and 90 health. Life Elixirs are quite helpful if you go to the Mines and Skull Cavern often.

Overall, I would still prefer on choosing Fruit Bats since it is quite versatile when it comes to its usage. Not only that it is quite helpful for the community center, but it is also helpful in earning money by shipping it directly to the bin or by placing it into jars/kegs to profit more. However, if you're more inclined toward Mushrooms, then it is also alright since it provides an increase in health when crafted into Life Elixirs. To be honest, it's just a matter of preference.

And what if we don't have that particular fear?

Two things:

First: despite what they say, Life Elixirs fill you to full no matter what.

Second: gold quality cheese is easier to get than making life elixirs from your mushrooms.
