i've been doing ancient fruit bc it sells for a lot and it keeps producing after you harvest it, but after just looking into it starfruit sells for more, so i might switch to that

It's starfruit in first, then ancient fruit, then pineapples. Pick your poison as they say

Actually after thinking about it and looking at the wiki, ancient fruit may be better in the long run, bc while it takes 28 days to grow initially it only takes 7 days to keep producing while starfruit takes 15 days to grow. i dont fully know though, maybe there's a downside that im not thinking of, or an upside to starfruit

It takes 13 days and can be sped up to 7 which is the same as ancient fruit.

It's in order of gold for day assuming your making it into wine. And yes rare seeds are my personal favorites I know alot of people don't care for the hassle of Making seeds to repopulate the greenhouse

I found this lengthy debate (pre 1.5) and it seems the top greenhouse profit contenders are/were starfruit, ancient fruit, hops, and peach/pomegranate.

I think some of the contributors to that discussion participate here as well. Shoutouts to Tom and Shneeky!

I think you may be confusing Ancient Seeds with Rare Seeds, the latter which can only be gotten from the travelling cart and cannot be processed by any machine.

I plant at least one of every fruit tree in my greenhouse, plus rows of plants that continue to produce (eggplants, hops, pineapples, etc). I typically have at least 1 iridium sprinkler's worth of ancient fruits, and then use the rest to grow one-shot plants like starfruit and beets.

No I'm speaking of rare seeds, I have built a playthrough around getting the sweetgem berry's, you end up having to put them through a seed make to get them reliably and most people don't like having to do that every harvest

I wasn't aware you could churn them through the seed maker, but that's very good to know. I might have to try this out sometime

For me:
First winter is hops, hands down (especially to make ale) if I couldn't get to Ginger Island yet. But for subsequent years I consider the type of gameplay I want to do.

Ancient Fruit
Pros: keeps producing after 7 days
Cons: not as profitable as Starfruit

Starfruit
Pros: very profitable, required to build Junimo huts
Cons: you have to keep planting it.

Sweet Gem
Pros: Its raw value is worth it, used in a quest
Cons: takes a long time, needs to keep on using the seed maker
(I haven't tried this one tho)

Pineapple is the best among the "regular" crops, followed by pumpkin I believe? The difference is that the former keeps regrowing, and the later can produce giant crops.
Then comes fairy rose and rhubarb (please correct me if I'm wrong)

Depends on the purpose...

If we're just talking profit, starfruit followed by ancient fruit. Ancient fruit is less work as it doesn't require replanting, making it easier profit. Alternately, pineapple can be farmed in garden pots with deluxe retaining soil in sheds... meaning you can turn sheds into greenhouses. You could do starfruit, but you can't do ancient fruit, so pineapples are the best profit crop with the lowest effort in sheds.

There is an argument to be made that other crops are better for other reasons, though. Some crops are useful for cooking foods that you'll want to eat in order so that you don't have to buy those foods. If you don't have access to infinite amounts of lobster bisque or seafoam pudding, for example, you might want some tomatoes in order to cook up some fish stew. (That's why I go mariner, though, so that I actually do have access to as much lobster bisque as I could ever want. That's also why I get a midnight carp pond, flounder pond and midnight squid pond, so that I always have as much seafoam pudding as I could want.) Maybe you just don't want to have to remember to buy your coffee/espresso all the time so you find coffee plants valuable?

Value isn't just about money. It's about what the thing enables you to do. Sure, money enables you to do a lot, and in fact is required for you to do a lot, but there are other things with value. It's just figuring out what their value is to you.

Or you could grow the crops you like to eat IRL. Or you could grow the crops that make the nicest colour pattern... or that your spouse and other favourite villagers like best. I have big collections of ancient fruit and starfruit but I somehow also end up with a load of pumpkins, peppers, fairy roses and strawberries. And oddly, sunflowers. And a few of many other crops; things that grow fast to round out the season, cooking ingredients, beets for sugar...

I understand how the maximum money is the biggest immediate appeal but it really isn't the only one.

I like having a spot in the greenhouse for the food I cook more often. Like @imnvs I like keeping the pounds for the seafoam pudding instead of, for example, having sturgeon for the caviar (although you need to have it at least once for the community bundle). In my case, I always like having a few parsnips to make the Farmer's Lunch during harvest and tons of coffee (and triple expressos) and tea. I also like making the fruit salad (for mines and skull cavern exploring) and pepper poppers (I only need to plant the hot pepper).
Sheds can be a nice greenhouse too and, as mentioned in another thread, maybe it is possible to have a few garden pots at the safe spots in the community center? Just a thought.

I’ve never been interested in garden pots before but garden pots in the community center are intriguing. It gives the center something to do.
