How, and when, did you achieve perfection?

What is really "unlocked" by perfection? Gravy. Why is it such a terrible thing that you have to grind to get that gravy? You don't need that gravy. There's plenty of other things you can do.

In my primary save, my 4-Corners, I walked into 1.5 in year 4 with everything done that came before... and I was able to achieve perfection early year 5.

I'm still working on my Beach Farm to see how long it'll take there.

On my first save file, I tried to get all the achievements in year 4. It felt grindy, so I stopped and started another save file. Then 1.5 hit, and I started doing the ginger island stuff. Decided not to go for completion in that save, because it was a foraging based farm, and it somehow didn't feel right.

My next farm is a fish based beach farm. Maybe I will reach completion on that one, but I doubt it.

I already have ideas for a flower based hilltop or river farm and a rancher four corners. Will they be complete? I don't know. Maybe I'll just watch that cut scene on YouTube at some point.

...

This is poor game design at its worst, locking content behind pointless achievements that 99% of the player base will never see.
... look, I already know you stated your distaste earlier regarding Mr. Qi (which is fine and had some good arguments to it), but let's be honest about the enduring content locked behind all of this. It's:

The Statue of True Perfection
the ??? Mask
golden chickens

... and that's kind of it? All of those are cute, but none of them are particularly game changing. I feel like the bigger tragedy of the update is the ostriches, since they are locked behind completing professor snail's museum and is easily part of the worst and least interesting grind in the game (waiting for that god awful mummified bat to drop). Ostrich eggs didn't really need a special incubator, and its inclusion feels like just another way to pad out the crafting recipes. I guess you could argue that this is the same issue as with the golden chickens, but at least the chickens are effectively just palette recolours. I don't know, I guess I am just sad I probably will never make a casual ostrich farm simply because revisiting the ginger volcano for +2 game years to get the stupid bat is so far above and beyond the effort needed to get even a dino farm going.

Perhaps the biggest beef I have is actually just with the name of the Statue of True Perfection. While it's a touch redundant at that point since you'll already have gotten dozens of prismatic shards and likely not have much use other than converting them into candy, the name does feel like a rub on all those who could just be happy getting the best grandpa results at the end of year 2. Perhaps just changing it to something like "Statue of Ample Abundance" might go a ways in shifting the tone of the thing - among other things, it feels more accurate (and if there's ever more updates, the goalposts for "perfection" might just shift again and... yeah).

There's plenty of new stuff without needing to do all of that, and it's fine to have some things for the people who have put hundreds of hours in.

And at the end of the day, toma02 isn't a person who can fix that. They just want to be able to enjoy/celebrate that they got it done. You might be better served by contacting ConcernedApe directly for the constructive criticism.

I got true perfection on Summer 25th, Year 4. Could be faster if that snake vertebrae didn't delay me. Because of it, I couldn't craft ostrich incubator.
Oh right, the snake vertebrae. that's the one where you have to dig up on the west side of the beach. I'll agree with that. I'll put that item as the third most grindy item I got, after the 2 auto-petters (one for each barn), and gold clock. Like, I still have 0 duplicates of that item, and I have duplicates of almost everything. I didn't have any issues with the other items for the archeology collection, but that vertebrae was nigh on impossible. I kept getting the snake head too. I dig and get the snake head. It would have been a lot better if the snake head had been strictly a fishing item, rather than being both fishing and a dig item.

I personally didn't have any trouble with the bat. I currently have 6 bats. I think it was a bit easier to get that then the dinosaur eggs, overall, of which I have 5 of (5 of the artifact eggs), and I spent a ton of time in skull cavern. You get the bat from just breaking rocks in the volcano. Breaking rocks in the volcano is fairly worthwhile in my mind too, since you get more stones out of it, and they only take one swing after you upgrade the power of the pickaxe. Pretty sure it's the fastest way to get them.

I also didn't have dozens of prismatic shards. What few I saved up got used up getting tool upgrades in the forge ( a random process that you can't easily cheese by resetting the day), and it was a relief to finally have a steady supply of them. I got really lucky early on by randomly getting the most important upgrades I wanted.

Are you a switch player, or elsewise? Because I play on switch, and having trouble with the bat seems more common on that platform for whatever reason. I found all the other professor snail bones in three seasons, including the two snake vertabrae, but for the bat I constantly had to revisit ginger island over and over across a two year stretch. And you want to know the funny thing? When I finally did get a bat, the very next rock I broke -dropped another bat-. It wasn't the last thing I did to hit the 100% completion since I dropped other things to fixate on it, but it was easily the most infuriating and that turn of the RNG just took the cake and had me laughing.

The second bat is absolutely enshrined on my farm as a trophy.

Computer player.

Well, if there is a low drop rate for the switch, then that should be fixed. There is no reason to have a really rare drop rate for any archeology items. Like, for the rarity of the museum pieces... it's not fine to have them be so rare that it takes several game years of digging, but at least you can be constantly searching for museum pieces from day one of starting your game. Ginger Island should be a bit more reasonable.

A lot of games give internal boosts to your chance of finding things if you go a long time searching, and this game should do something similar, to prevent undue frustration.

If drop rates aren't the same i'd be surprised. It's probably just a skewed perception, kinda how like how it takes forever to cook a meal when you're hungry, but then time just seems to glide by after you're done with dinner.

This is just kind of a random comment and I agree with pretty much all of your post, but I'm guessing the reason ostriches have a special incubator is because they live in the barn, and the barn didn't have an incubator before. I wish they lived in the coop, because a) all the other birds are in the coop and b) it's kinda silly that chickens, the cheapest coop animal, are also best for money, it would be nice if ostriches replaced them late-game (although I did that math before 1.4, so maybe rabbits are better now that wool can give more than one cloth, IDK). But I suppose they have to live in the barn because they wouldn't fit through the coop door.

(Also yeah, like Ereo said, the bat drop rate is a bug and a fix is coming.)

I never bothered with acheiving perfection in my first save. I'm working on it with Jules right now (and have everything but the Golden Clock.)

The golden clock is the only thing that truly feels grindy to me, though the items crafted had a couple of odd turns as I tried to figure out what I didn't have. And the reason it feels grindy is that I never for a moment was trying to maximize profit, but my rate of money accumulation had me on track to need 4 more in game years to get there, where now it's less than a year for sure. I've been undermining the grind with some of my other activities, but actually keeping that close an eye on my daily income for this extended a stretch is not how I play.

I also decided to achieve perfection now partly because I'm pretty close to 100% certain I will never bother trying again.

I mean, my next farmer plans are: an ace and somewhat distant flower gardener and forager with no interest in raising any animals but fowl (plus East Scarp), a social fan of strawberries and coffee aka "let's redo my first farmer but with all the things she didn't know -- and some new and different mods", and an overly blunt and awkward rancher who nonetheless wants to meet people, and wants ALL THE ANIMALS ALL THE TIME and couldn't care less about most crops. Also where I finally try SVExpanded and do Jojamart. None of those sound like concepts that are in line with Perfection.

(is it weird that I already have in depth plans for exactly who and what my future farmers are? Oh, well, I do. I even have thoughts about a 4th...)

You’re in good company. Early in my first save I decided I wanted to play most of the farm maps (on the fence about Wilderness) with different styles of play. I’m early-to-midway through my second farm, 3 more planned: names, maps, romantic partners, CC vs. Joja, sociability, etc. Perfection? Probably on farm 5, but after I go back to farm 1 where my first farmer will get to go explore that large 1.5 area. She’s my mistake-making farmer, whereas my fifth farmer should know what she/they are doing.

I'm working on getting perfection with my forest farm in particular, where I'm currently working on raising the money for the golden clock. My problem with going for perfection is by the time I get into that stage of the game I start to get bored because it feels like I'm constantly grinding on the same things every time I play. I had hoped streaming would help with that, but I still found myself getting bored and starting up a new riverlands farm to play to do something different.

I recently achieved the ‘perfection’ on my Switch Beach Farm save, in year 9. I would’ve received it sooner, but I kept spending my money, as well as was multitasking with both completing things and decorating. I’m still not finished with my save however, given how I am now mostly focused on decorating and rearranging things (I’ve abolished a couple of buildings and ponds, seeing as I no longer need them), both on my farm and all of Pelican Town. I also want to do a bit more on my beach farm, which is almost finished with being decorated.

Haha, i love this so much. I get it though, and no, i don't think it's weird. I personally plan to do a complete bunny farm (with special guest void chicken and dinorawr) eventually, and also one of those farms where I have nothing but fish ponds and aquariums everywhere. It'll be fun if I ever get around to doing it.

Oh, and just a small update: I still have not achieved perfection. And absolutely nobody was surprised.

I'm working on getting it for the first time in my nth save now. In my last couple saves, I started following a time plan and still do:
1st year - completing the basic tasks (incl. community centre) making as much money as possible (which also means running all the errands from the notice boards)
2nd & 3rd year - arranging my farm and all buildings inside as I want them to be (I guess it will never be perfect)
4th - 6th year - Ginger Island with all its puzzles and quests
7th - 10th year - dating all bachelors and bachelorettes & marrying and divorcing one after another, incl. having kids (just want to have experienced it all)
11th year - perfection - I guess, if at all, there will be only the golden clock left at this time.
I'm currently in the end of fall of year 6, having saved 3,500,000 g, struggling to get 4 dragon teeth left to buy the last obelisk.

But yeah - 10 millions, that's my total earnings as of yet. So ... in these six years, if I didn't buy anything, I could buy this fabulous clock right now.

I specifically ground for this on my Beach Farm save and Ginger Ale and Bombs (for Lava Lurk), plus Stingray Pond, plus Geologist for double drops all contributed to finally getting... 11. Final drop was a double from a Tooth on the floor. Pulled out all the stops because just prospecting in the Volcano Dungeon was going wayyy too slow for my short attention span.

I'm a geologist > gemologist too, but the Volcano Dungeon can be annoying. Been there so many times, and only two times found a dragon skeleton - without a tooth!!! 😠 I actually found 8 of them, but had to sacrifice two for a badly needed warp totem ...

You can bomb Lava Lurks? I always work my butt off killing them with an iridium loaden Master Slingshot,

Actually I just prefer to wait for the Lurks to approach the Lava edge (which they seem to like to do) and spam the Galaxy Sword. I rarely take much damage and got a couple Teeth that way.

Swinging your sword can defend from their fire attack. And if they aren't near the edge for you to swing at, they'll come to it soon.
