Do materials take up your inventory space?

The rules say that your are limited to 6 resources, and then it lists the 8 resource types, specifically pointing out building materials as NOT resources. So my interpretation is that I can have unlimited materials and they are stored off the board, which doesn't seem right either.

Materials like wood, stone and fiber all take up inventory space. On page 21 when they explain the different kinds of resources, under "other tiles" they explain these tiles also take up inventory but cannot be given as gifts to villagers.
