confused about ostriches and their locations **spoilers**

So I found my first ostrich egg and hatched it. It confused me that I had to put the incubator in the barn since it was an egg. But I did so and Clementine joined our animal family. When Clementine gave me another egg, it also went into the incubator. I'm doing some testing to see which mayo produces the most money. Anyway I'm confused on why an egg incubator has to be in the barn and the ostriches are hanging out with the cows and goats instead of the chickens. Seems more logical to be in the coup. Is that just me?

Compare size. Nothing in the coop is bigger than a small dog, yes, even the dinos. Putting an ostrich in there seems just as odd as keeping them with the cows... which is why I have two barns (12 ostriches in 1st barn; 4 cows, 6 goats, 2 pigs in 2nd barn).

Thank you @imnvs. That is the only possible explanation that makes since. I see that you are raising a bunch of them. Help me with the math here. Ostriches give an egg every 7 days. One egg makes 10 mayonnaise which sell for 266g each (that's regular no-star mayo). One dinosaur gives an egg every 7 days and that jar sells for 1120g. So it appears to me I would make slightly more on mayo with ostriches. BUT, since they are in the barn and not the coup, it's irrelevant.

Since I'm doing a slight redesign of my farm, I might just have enough room for an ostrich barn which would make better role laying sense. Have to give that some thought...

If after you put your first ostrich egg in the incubator and it hatches and it begins laying, if you put the first egg it produces into the incubator immediately... you will get another egg before the new ostrich hatches, AND if you continue to put eggs into the incubator as each new ostrich hatches, never missing once... you will end up with 2 days of the week when you get 1 egg, and 5 days of the week when you get 2 eggs. That's an average of 1&5/7ths eggs per day. Once they are all at 5 hearts, they will average gold quality eggs which means gold quality mayonnaise. That is 285 (base + quality only), and with 1&5/7ths eggs per day you will average 488.57g/day in mayonnaise from 12 ostriches in that barn.

If we're doing a mathematical comparison, though? I also have 2 pigs, and with gatherer and botanist, I average about 6 truffles per day for 7.5k. If I was to get a barn with just pigs, the expected yield would be 6x that or 45k/day.

I just like ostriches.

Thanks for the egg hatching tip! As luck would have it, I put the next egg in the incubator the same day it was hatched. The next egg is all ready to go in .5 days. I'll keep saving future eggs so I can fill my new barn with the cute things.

I tried the pigs and honestly, I don't care for them. I've been around real pigs and the smell... Oh my. I'd rather have animals that I don't KNOW that smell that bad or the sound annoys me. The ostriches make cute noises. So Robin is starting to build my new ostrich barn tomorrow. For my other barn, I like the goats. A little annoying with their noise but the aged goat cheese fetches a pretty penny. So in the largest barn, I have one cow, one rabbit and 10 goats.

What about selling the ostriches rather than the eggs? I’m curious on the math there, both if you go fifo and lifo (first in first out vs last in first out). I can crunch some numbers tonight and will report back. I’m not up to ostriches yet in my current save, never had them before. Can you have multiple incubators? One per barn? One total? How does that work, as that will heavily influence the math.

There is only one way to find your first ostrich egg. From there, you can have multiple ostrich egg incubators. I’m unaware of an upper limit, but since you can only have 12 ostriches per barn, I’m guessing you’d only want 12 incubators at maximum. I only had one incubator and that worked well to hatch my 6 ostriches. The mayonnaise quality will match the quality of the ostrich egg if that changes your calculations at all.

Thank you very much for this!

I'm thinking the optimal amount is likely to be either 1, 6, or 4, depending on how the math works out. At 12 you'd need to empty out the barn every time and replenish it from a second barn to make it work. If anyone has access to Ostriches and the time and inclination to do so, any chance I could get the following data points?

- What is the sell price of a 0 heart Baby Ostrich?
- If you pet the Ostrich every day, from the time it's born, can you verify it's at 1 heart the first day it's grown?
- Assuming that is accurate, what is the sell price of a 1 heart grown Ostrich?

I'll gather the data myself when I get there but it's likely to be a long time based on where I'm currently at, so any assistance that can be provided in regards to this would be greatly appreciated.

Two ways - can also get them from Rare Chests in the Volcano.

Giant Octopodes, sorry, I didn't copy my save file when I dealt with my ostrich. I know I looked at selling the instant it was hatched (because I had just gotten another egg from a Rare Chest), but I ended up keeping it long enough to produce one egg. I think it was about one heart at that point, but can't guarantee it wasn't, say, 0.8 hearts or something. The egg was silver quality, so I succeeded in getting the rare silver quality mayo. 🙂 The sell price from the ostrich was pretty decent I think but I don't remember the details (just that it wasn't as disappointing as the dinosaur). I sell animals to get rid of them, not for the money as such. Sorry about the lack of detail.

A fully grown ostrich at 1/2 heart sells for 7200g (okay 7199g but who wants to do the math on that). Now, I generally pet my animals but it’s not 100% of the time. It’s possible a newly adult ostrich could be at a full heart with a better owner. I wish I had checked the sell price of my most recent hatchling.

You get a maximum of 30 points of friendship each time you pet (if you have Shephard and not Artisan, which seems unlikely) and +8 points for eating grass outside. An ostrich grows up in 7 days. Assuming a farmer with the Shephard perk pets every day and every day is sunny, they could have a maximum of 7*38 = 226 friendship points with the ostrich. One full heart is 200 points. (Numbers coming from the wiki page on animals.)
So yes, it is possible to have a newly adult ostrich with a full heart of friendship, but only if you take Shephard instead of Artisan, which I would assume is not a profitable trade-off for most people.
