Rival Couples...?

OK, let me first start off with saying that 1.5 is soooo awesome, I appreciate it a lot and can't really ask for more; the game is already super great, and so my suggestion is only just a thought.
Rival couples in the game seems like a kinda cool aspect. Think about it: your fellow Pelican Town villagers can get married to each other and live together, and have little kids of their own-it'd be really sweet. But only if this was an option-in some playthroughs I just want to chill and have all the time in the world, not be pressured by a rival interest. But if this was toggle-able, I could feel pretty good knowing I have control over everything, while seeing villagers enjoy life with their own, new families.
Alternatively, you'd have to view all of the rival events of a couple before they can get married. That gives you plenty of time to marry your love interest before they're taken.
I know that this update would be super complicated, and maybe ruin the carefree, simple vibe of Stardew. It's just interesting to imagine villagers with families and husbands/wives.
Thanks for hearing me out!

This was abandoned in favour of allowing the player to always have maximum marriage options. The divorce mechanic is based around the idea that no one else will EVER get married, so you can dump whomever you are currently with, and marry someone else (you can even re-marry the person you divorced). That sort of feature doesn't really work if everyone else is married after you have a divorce.

This is probably the one aspect of the game I disagree with the most, but it is what it is. I don't see the point in asking. Friends of Mineral Town also had rivals originally, but the remake got rid of them. Apperently it was super unpopular in Japan, and you can't even divorce in those games. There are no modern farming sim games that have it currently, to the best of my knowledge. It makes me mad, if you want to get married to someone, just make sure you marry that person before the rival can. Jeez.

Back to Stardew, it's listed on the sticky thread of ideas that are not going to happen. *double checks* OH! It's unknown. Wow. Really? I can't imagine this being added, it seems to contrary to current gameplay. Let me just do a search on the suggestion thread. *checks* Just ONE thread, and it was part of a multi suggestion thread? Only one reply to it as well. How has this not come up more?

Hmm. I really want this feature. I don't think I would get it added but, since it's listed as unknown, I'll add my voice to people making the request.

I guess the best way to go about it is to set it up so that you are helping set up the rival couple, instead of it sneaking up on you due to time passing, or raising heart levels. That seems the method that is least likely to cause complaints. I guess you could make... a shrine of rival divorcees... if you.... REALLY need to lets players have the option of being a homewrecker. *disapproval intensifies*

Oh! That's it, a shrine of rival marriages. Make it a toggle in the game. That would be PERFECT. Maybe put it in the sewers? The farm cave could also be enlarged to fit in a shrine like this. I think that would make most people happy with this being added.

The main issue with having people get married that most of the candidates actually live with their parents.

To think that the bachelor/bachelorette you like so much was destiny to be with someone else,1 out of 12 candidates is going to be taken from their happiness how can my farmer sleep at night.

Then add a rival farmer. It doesn't have to be a farmer maybe an inn keeper for this romance options to move out of their parents house. That way if you marry Sebastian they will marry Abby. That way everything would be in balance

Or a new romance option, one that doesn’t mingle with the candidates similar to Skye from harvest moon ds. The rest can go like toma02 ideas. Im fine with whoever i marry at long as no couple is being separate 🤷‍♀️ Then i could enjoy playing cupid pair them together for fun - maximum events.

I'd rather focus on other elements of the game to make it more fun than playing matchmaker. There's plenty of things that are broken that need to be fixed first before making such a major change to the game. I think that's where we should focus instead.

Yea me too but if this rival feature gonna get add, im just gonna roll with it. Tbh im not a big fan of seeing my future fiancé flirting with other gurl in a slow motion cutscene.

I personally am not a big fan of the entitlement players have to every single marriable candidate. Do you also have an issue with the player being allowed to "flirt" with other girls and boys in the game? Maybe you'd like to make a new suggestion thread stating that you cannot have two girlfriends at once, and that you are not allowed to divorce after marrying in order to hook up with someone else? No? So, it's okay for you to be dating multiple others but not for anyone else. You know that behaviors change as you increase your heart counts, right?

Don't believe me, check out the actions of Eliott.

Thursday, Friday if the player has 6+ hearts with Leah

TimeLocation
8:00 amAt home
11:30 amLeaves home and heads to Pierre's General Store
5:30 pmLeaves Pierre's and heads home for the night
Friday and Sunday If the player has less than 6 hearts with Leah

TimeLocation
8:00 amAt home
11:00 amLeaves his cabin to stand on the docks next to Willy's house
5:00 pmLeaves the docks to visit The Stardrop Saloon
11:40 pmLeaves the saloon to return home for the night

His schedule changes, based on how many hearts you have with Leah. Why do you think that is?

Well, let's look at Friday here, if you have low hearts with Leah, Eliott visits the Saloon at 5pm and leaves at 11:40pm

Let's look at Leah's spring friday schedule.

Rainy day, Friday, and Saturday

TimeLocation
9:00 amSculpts in her cottage.
12:00 pmMoves to her easel to paint.
2:00 pmStands in front of the bookcase in her cottage.
4:00 pmLeaves her cottage and walks to The Stardrop Saloon.
11:40 pmLeaves the Saloon to return home and sleep.

Look at that, she also visits the Saloon every Friday and leaves at 11:40pm

Both Elliot and Leah visit the Saloon on friday and leave at the same time, but only if your hearts with Leah are 6 or below. What could this possibly mean?

I'll tell you what I think, I think it's because he was spending time with her, because they are a unofficial game pairing, and when you get enough hearts, Elliot decides that he no longer has a chance to be with Leah and stops hanging around with her so much. This flirting is already happening, you just didn't notice, and Eliott is a low key Cliff. Pay attention to the Flower Festival Dance. Every marriable couple has someone they pair up with, do you feel guilt at breaking up those pairings? I'd bet not. In order for you to have a dance, SOMEONE must stay single.

Maybe you weren't aware, but the game has already created the NPC pairings, and your actions are breaking them up, so it's a bit late to be complaining about it now. I just want the relationships to have a chance to grow, and not remain permanently stunted.

Woah calm down fam where did all that coming from? Do you get jelly when your crush flirt with somebody else? That what i mean. Idk what point in my comment made you think that i want to date mutil npc when in reality i only married Alex in all my gameplay. Are you ok? Do you feel stress?

Having the option to let the community continue to develop and change around the farmer is fun, and relationships as part of that make sense! A toggle to allow folks who may want to marry and divorce then marry again etc seems good.
There's plenty of background for NPC couples, so it would make a natural progression

This honestly sounds like a better idea for a mod than an actual game update. Perhaps you should aim for that instead. That or make your own game, I'd love to see how it turns out.
