Dropping items from inventory

Can this be done? I know you can put stuff in your trashcan, but despite claims in the guide, I am unable to just "drop" an item by pulling it out of my knapsack. Can anybody enlighten me?

Yes you can drop your items, but make sure the dropped item is out of your magnet radius.
Unequip rings that give you magnetism like magnet ring or iridium band, then drop the item from your inventory.
Sometimes the item will still be in your base magnet radius and you will immediately pick it up again. If that's the case, just keep dropping it until the item is far enough from you

How you do it depends on your platform.

On PC you click off the inventory with an item picked up.

On consoles there should be a clickable area off the inventory, to the right iirc, that does the same thing. I don't know if this is available on all consoles.

I've unequipped my magnet rings, but still no luck. When I pull the item off it becomes "transparent" but no matter what I do, left click, right click, enter, it won't drop onto the map. Any suggestions?

After picking up your item from your inventory, place your cursor outside the inventory and click there. You should be able to drop the item this way.
If you're talking about tools, I'm not sure if you can drop tools.

Okay, let me ask you... why are you dropping items from your inventory? The only reason you should ever want to do so is to make space... and the only time I need to make such space is when I'm in the mines/skull cavern/volcano dungeon. If you drop something there... there's no real coming back for it. If you leave and re-enter, a new map is generated.

I would recommend just upgrading your trash can. Then, when you need to ditch stuff while adventuring you can just drop it in the trash can and get some of its value in cash.

I'm trying to block the "gopher holes" on the island. this is the recommended method in the Wiki. I have absolutely no luck in trying to dump water on it.

Is that the whack-a-mole thingy? If yes, try to use upgraded watering can. Charge your watering can and water it from the distance

Yeah, just dropping something from inventory isn't going to work. You need something placed there. I use fence posts. Block all but one with a solitary fence post each, go get him at the last one.

BTW, it doesn't have to be fence posts, basically any object you can place on the ground works. I used cobblestone flooring. The point is, you have to place it, not drop it.

Okay, let me ask you... why are you dropping items from your inventory?

I do this pretty regularly in multiplayer if I need to give someone a stack of a certain item. A more rare use case would be if I'm in the mines and have a full inventory, then get a secret note. I can drop something, pick up the note and consume it, then pick up the other item.
