PC [BUG] Game freezes several times a gaming session - how can I stop losing progress?

It's getting to be extremely frustrating. It never happens when I'm in the game, but I switch off it a lot to check my Discord messages, look something up on the wiki, or change to a different YouTube video, for example, and then when I switch back to my game, it's frozen. Doesn't matter if I'm out of the game window for a second or 2 minutes, it has a potential to freeze and I have to restart my entire day. It's so annoying. What can I do? This literally never happened to me ONCE before 1.5 and the problem hasn't gone away with any of the recent updates. This doesn't happen to me with any other game or program.

Specs:
Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 6-Core
RAM: 16.0 GB
OS: Windows 10 Home
Graphics: AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT

Can you share your most recent error log? (Crashes don't always produce an error log, so you may not see any in the folder).
  • On Windows, press the windows key + R and enter %appdata%/stardewvalley/errorlogs.
  • On Mac, from your desktop click Go in the menubar (in the top right), then "Go to folder..." at the bottom of that menu. Enter ~/.config/StardewValley/ErrorLogs/.
If you have SMAPI installed, the best way to share a log is via https://smapi.io/log. Thanks!

The most recent error log is not at all recent. It's from over a month ago and about 3 in-game years ago. Here it is anyway. I do not have SMAPI or any mods.

That's likely from a different issue, but thank you sharing it! It's likely this freezing issue isn't creating any logs.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I am still having this exact same problem months later and it's really annoying. I spent 5 minutes watering my field, getting my animals pet, and then as soon as I clicked on the elevator to explore the mine, my game crashed. It's making me want to just delete the game forever.

There's a much better chance the game created a crash log at %appdata%/stardewvalley/errorlogs than with a freeze at least, would you mind checking again to see if there's a new file?

When you say you're still having the exact same problem, does that mean you are often crashing like this, or still primarily getting the freezing issue that seemed related to alt-tabbing, and just also crashed this time?

The game crashed twice today without alt-tabbing. I do not have a crash log. Rather than repeating the same day for the third time, I've just given up. The game is just unplayable right now.

If you feel like trying again at some point, installing SMAPI and then playing until it happens again may provide a log with more information for the crashes specifically. Just having it installed will install a couple utility mods and generate detailed logs from startup onwards, so it's worth a shot. (I'd also make sure you're not running any software that can intercept the game, like Riva Tuner, Afterburner, other "tweak" programs etc.)

I don't even know what those programs are or what tweak means so I probably don't have them. I will look into the SMAPI install. Thank you for the advice!

I installed SMAPI and my old mods. It crashed again after working okay for the past day or so (of course, right after I picked up my first prismatic shard and was trying to put it in a chest at home :( ). Not sure if there is anything useful at all in this.

Sorry I should also add that it was working fine when I was super, super careful not to click on anything on my second monitor. About 15-30 minutes after I clicked off the Stardew window to change the playback speed of a video I was watching, the game crashed.
