What's your first language? German is definitely easier for English speakers. For me, Japanese has been challenging simply because I have to learn a new writing system.

I actually agree with Anhaga. I tried to learn Japanese before but I didn't continue because I was learning because of a friend.. I tried to learn the numbers in Japanese which I was able to master in few days but yeah... :frown: Obenkyo (Google Play App) was my friend in learning numbers and including Kanji (if I remember it right..)

I'm doing German because I'm seeing opportunities in related to work and its a fun thing to study. I've followed several Facebook pages so that I can see helpful stuff in learning the language. Hoping covid goes away very soon so I can enroll in person.

I suggest you try both and see which one gets you hooked up to. Basics for tourists/travelers is not bad to learn especially you plan to visit the countries in the future. Good luck and enjoy!

I dunno. Japanese is hard but I have really strong negative vibes with German.
I honestly don't care if it's hard. So many people are telling me that it's insanely hard to learn as if that's something I would care about...
if you don't try new things, you'll live an extremely boring life... just sayin'

sorry - does that sound rude? it's not meant to be lol

Sorry but I'm literally never going to go to China. Japan and Germany are on my bucket list though.
And how on earth is Mandarin more useful than German or Japanese?
Maybe you dont think you'll go in China, like I would have never think before it happened to me. But sometime it happens for professional purpose.

Do you really want to spend years to learn a language, just because you would like to visit that country one or two weeks in life ?

Chinese is the most used language in the world : 1.3 billion native speakers. Four times more than English.

Also, whatever could say Trump, China is about to become (if not already, depending of the criteria) the first economical power in the world, and still growing way faster than USA. The whole world economy depends on China.

Let's try to avoid what may become a political discussion, especially since the thread is about learning German or Japanese! I do understand you point that Mandarin is a very useful language to learn for many business settings, but there are lots of different reasons to learn a language!

Rippy, it sounds like you're leaning more towards Japanese, so I'd recommend that one. I personally find it much easier to learn something if I'm interested in it.

This. And it's not like you can't switch if you find that you're struggling too much with Japanese for it to stay interesting! I do a lot of language switching . . . Duolingo makes that waaaay too easy. That's why I now know a tiny bit of Japanese, a bit more German, enough Finnish to tell my niece that she's an adorable little bunny in her mom's native language . . .

Everyone far better at learning languages than I has always recommended pursuing languages out of pleasure, not obligation. So based on your quote here, I voted Japanese.

As someone who lives in Japan and speaks of a bit of the language, I strongly recommend learning the hiragana very, very well right off the bat. It's a bit of a pain to make yourself rote memorize them. (I had the best luck writing them over and over while saying the pronunciation out loud), but once you have those, all other learning materials will be exponentially easier to use, and you'll have a leg up on other media (television, manga, books) to help maintain your interest. がんばってね!
