A slime that is killed will only drop eggs if you built a slime hutch. The chance of dropping an egg is 1%, I think, regardless of the color of slime. Other than that, you can craft a slime press to create slime eggs. You can hatch the eggs as long as you have a slime incubator even without a hutch. They do tend to escape and reproduce like crazy. I just sell the eggs.
