Grandpa was a magician. He didn't want to die so he cast a spell to make himself immortal. It backfired and caused his spirit to split from his body but remain stuck in Stardew Valley and his body immediately died. The other side effect was that a powerful magic bubble formed around Stardew Valley causing all sentient inhabitants within it to live the same moment over and over but experience it as a new day.

Wow. This explains everything that has ever bothered me about Grandpa. Especially the fact that he continues to appear after the four candle evaluation. HaHaHa, gramps, your soul will never really be at peace!

I'll just add that Rasmodius is trying to release him, and that's what he's hoping the farmer will help him achieve. It's this obsession that drives him to constant research without ever sleeping.
