My tip is to stop worrying about money and just play the game. Everything you do will make money eventually. Do whatever is fun for YOU. Then, every now and then, you glance at your total and wonder if there is anything you could spend it on.
In all honestly... the few times I worried about money were simply for buying the backpack upgrades early on. I was moreso focused on getting through the mines with whatever energy I had left from watering the plants. Then when you get quality sprinkers you get more time for the mines until you reach the bottom.

Then if you get Caroline's 2 heart event, I just make as many Tea Saplings as I can to get the vault done for the Skull Cavern. By this point you should have Kegs and Crystallariums which give you enough money for your buildings (specifically the Barn/Shed/Coop). It's not until Year 2 where you get really rich. You can do that earlier, but it requires neglecting a lot of stuff, like grinding fishing to reach a ton of money or grinding Caroline, which I am not too fond of.

Calling all @FilthyGorilla ’s How did you get your start with the big money? Everyone has to start somewhere, right? What's the smartest way to earn money? I'm busy filling the greenhouse with ancient fruit. Do you have any other tips????
Best way to start is to find something you can actually enjoy doing and be consistent.

Usually there isn't one single 'smart' way to make money, but there are totally 'smart' ways of managing your time. The biggest piece of advice I like to give players going through a standard perfection playthrough is to get started in a small way, and early. If you can fit a half day every week towards making money, you'll realize you have millions of g in excess by the time you actually need it, and plenty to spare on pleasure purchases like a return scepter, coffee, bombs, or anything else. This could be wine, a few barns you slowly upscale with sheep or pigs, a big dehydrator setup, even ponds work nowadays.

In all honesty it's a little like investing in real life? Usually the small nest egg you start up early on and a little dedication to actually work away at it is the least effort, least stressful, and best return on your investment you could ask for.
