Sheeps

How many of you have bought and cared for a sheep in Stardew? And really utilized them. Like, gotten at least 6 sheep for profit.

I've never gotten a sheep for anything more than just their cute factor.

I just get my wool from rabbits, as rabbit feet are both valuable and a widely loved gift. (Except for Penny, I believe-)

That, and I get a lot of cloth just from mummies.

Sheep are excellent for low-effort g accumulation as they feed themselves and the AutoGrabber shears them for you. Plant a buncha Grass and leave the Barn open and they do it all themselves. Toss a few Looms in the Barn and process the Wool into Cloth whenever you feel like it and sell for pretty good g. Way less effort than Pigs for only slightly less g.

And they're cute!

It's interesting how this thread perfectly summarizes my feeling about sheep:
- I prefer rabbits to get wool, because they also provide rabbit feet
- If aiming at money, by the time there are enough sheep and they have enough friendship to generate a steady income, there are more profitable paths (crops+wine) available
- Wooly sheep are sooo cute... but many of them means manual shearing... unless we use an autograbber, which implies loss of cuteness...

But reading your points convinced me: I have a meadowlands farm in progress, at an early stage and I will build a barn with only sheep in it. They will be allowed to roam freely in the meadows and I shall shear them manually.

In my current save I got some sheep for the first time ever, cause I decided to have only one rabbit this time and they give a lot more wool. It's nice to have all these different animals this time, one barn with cows, sheep and goats, one for the pigs and Ostrichs and two coops with chickens, ducks, dinos and a rabbits... Lucky me having a big meadow for them all 😁.

I think deciding what animals to raise is a great part about this game. It adds to replayability.

I could have one save where I have a goat cheese empire, and then I have another save, that has a mountain made out of truffles from my pig army. The choices are pretty exciting.

I agree that they are many replayability possibilities brought by what animals to raise, though I'm not a big fan of ranching. I usually got one animal of (almost) each type for the various achievements or quests. They, I keep cows for cheese and chickens for the occasional Gus quest or cooking.

As for the pigs, I have one farmer with a deluxe barn full of pigs. It generates a lot of money, but it's quite intensive to clean up all the truffles every day, so the pigs have many empty tiles the next day to be productive.

@Lew Zealand said that sheep can also be (almost) very valuable with less work, I'm curious to try that.

I've picked them up more readily than I do pigs because of the cuteness factor (Sorry, pigs, but I just don't like your vanilla design), but I don't think I've ever had more than three. OTOH, if I get any, I never have LESS than two either, because in real life, sheep do very poorly without company of their own species; it's a herd thing, and they're much worse about it than cows or goats.

With enough auto-petters Sheep are theoretically the best for money per player effort, other than golden chickens but that's post-perfection so they don't count. I have a save with the beach farm with over a dozen barns so far. Selling the wool, not turning it into cloth. This is a joja run so I'm buying auto-petters, otherwise if you don't have auto-petters and assuming you want to stop petting them at some point, I think it's required that they eat grass outside to maintain their hearts and mood, so you're limited with how many you can put on your farm and feed.

They are cute and hands-free, compared to pigs, so they earn their spot on my farms. If you don't want to be on the Shepherd perk most of the time, maybe the Ostriches are the next-best? Not sure about that and even they still prefer that you're on Shepherd.

I think they need company, not only of their own species. In the farms near the places where I grew, it was common to have horses or donkeys in the same corrals than one or more sheep, because horses and donkeys do not like to be alone either.

We have horses in Stardew Valley, thus I'm considering placing the stable in near the barn of my sheep...
