Question Transferring mods/ saves

Hey, so I have a question. Christmas has just passed and as my main gift I have got a new Mac for my studies/ gaming. Stardew valley is one of the main games I play, and I have it downloaded on steam. I used to play on an old windows computer. I have already transferred a save before as I used to play on an iPad before my windows computer and that went fairly smoothly. The difference is- to get Stardew on the windows I downloaded it on steam. So if I log into steam on my mac, will I just need to redownload and my saves will still be there? Or do I need to transfer again?

Second question- I’m aware modding is different on mac, to be honest, I haven’t looked into it yet, I just know it’s possible but different. I’m going to assume that my mods will not be transferred with the game as that would make sense. I use popular romance mods like free love (as I’m just an indecisive girl) and there’s where my main concern is. At the moment I have two spouses, Alex and sam, and I proposed to Sebastian. If I were to redownload the mod on my Mac, will that still be saved? As in, will I still have my spouses? It sounds like a simple question but i just want to make the transfer is as seamless as possible.

First question if your saves are on steam cloud it should be fine. Get your actual save files anyways just to be safe. Second question your mods are definitely not getting transfered. Idk if the free love mod is gonna sync if you download the mods and start but if you wana try then definitely install all the mods first then start the game otherwise the save is gonna be wobbly. Modding is definitely possible on Mac but not easy by any means.

Cool okay thank you! I haven’t even logged into my Mac or gotten anything set up yet so I’ll have to cross the bridge with the mods when I get to it… thank you for the help!

Hey! So for anyone with the same issue, I have now officially crossed the bridge and I have done it. Modding on a Mac is actually relatively easy- the hardest part is getting smapi to work, really all you have to do is follow the direct instructions on the Stardew valley wiki. What confused me was after you attempt to open the file to download it on Mac and it tells you you’re not able to, make sure you go to settings- privacy and security, scroll down and it will tell you that the file has been blocked, there you should be able to “open anyway”. A video that should help if you get past downloading smapi and you’re still struggling is on YouTube by Dalia Osman- ‘How to mod Stardew valley on Mac’ from 2 years ago, it helped me.

Now for anyone wondering the same thing for the mods- yes, you do have to download them again! But if you use free love like I do- your spouses do save. Obviously, you just need to redownload the mod first. I also use The happy birthday mod, which in that case it doesn’t save. The difference is, when you marry in Stardew the ‘Marrying’ is an actual part of the vanilla game, so it remembers that in your save, and with the mod redownloaded it can let you have all of the spouses. I didn’t open the game without redownloading so I have no idea what would happen if you open it without the mod and you previously had multiple spouses. I wouldn’t try it. With mods such as ‘happy birthday’ it is a completely new thing implemented and isn’t saved in the vanilla game, so without the mod, it no longer exists.
