Bobbi was in her familiar horrible mood because
as usual her teammates were completely incompetent and her typical frustrated ramming of their cars was giving her no satisfaction. "No explosion, no happy!" she growled. "I'll fire
both of you and blow you up after you join another team, I don't even care if I lose the match as long as you end up
consumed in fire!!," she screamed at nobody as her teammates had long since turned off their comms.
...
The scene dissolves as she jerks awake, mostly warm in bed and completely disconcerted, heartrate and breathing raised above their usual. Blinking at the early morning's slanted rays illuminating the walls through greenish fishtanks, reality slowly emerges.
I... I don't do that any more, Bobbi thinks.
I haven't done that in almost 6 years, when will these stupid dreams end? She slides out of bed and hears the sound of small feet in the distance, but indoors.
Oh yeah, kids, she smirks.
Hey wait I'm married, where's my wife?
Bobbi looks around, absently checks the TV and invokes the daily blessings from her house statues, going through the motions but not registering what any of them provide.
Where wife? I do have... yes yes I got married! Stupid nightmare brain fog.
Bobbi eventually winds her way to the Kitchen where she finds Emily perusing the bookcase in silence.
"Sooo... what we looking for?," Bobbi asks but there is no reply. Emily is deep in thought and seems not to notice any familiar sounds of human interaction. Bobbi is not quite up to speed with this day either so she gets it and decides to set a spell and consider her wife.
"Hey. Hey. You there. With the Blue and Red. Look, I'm a book!," Bobbi grabs a book and waves it as Emily turns towards her.
"Hi!" No response. "Uh, I'm Bobbi, you may remember me from such events as 'Studying my books and maybe someone else in the Saloon' and 'Boy wasn't that a convenient bear visit in the Secret Woods' and 'I now pronounce you wife and wife.'" There was little reaction, maybe the slightest of smiles as Emily looked down and back to the bookcase.
Huh, Bobbi thought,
maybe she got up on the wrong side of the bed too. As Bobbi hopped off the bench to leave the house, she started grinning from ear to ear, planning to get into the other side of the bed before Emily that night and see what reaction she got.
I'll bet it's a good one! Problem is, Bobbi doesn't remember things from one hour to the next, much less a plan for 12 hours hence.
Bobbi remembered something though, the newly re-landscaped and reforested Train Crossing should be done and it was time to check it out. However fashion must also be pursued so it was time to see Sandy first.
"I see you every day Sandy, what are you on about?" Bobbi retorts as she tries to give Sandy a noogie on her head. Sandy wears her heart and humor on her sleeve which is why Bobbi and Emily like her so much but Sandy also knows how to control rowdy customers and a small farmer is easy for her to subdue.
Now with Bobbi well-contained in a headlock, Sandy continues, "You are such a cute little desert snake but this mongoose has danced with many like you, some much larger and well..." She leans closer to Bobbi so she can mostly see her and whispers, "I look forward to the close contact and physical exertion so I think I'll keep you here just a bit longer." Maybe her arm loosened a bit, maybe she just de-tensed her muscles but if that happened, Bobbi didn't notice. "Oh now you're changing color, I like you the other way better!," and Sandy releases Bobbi with disarming giggle as if they'd been playing a children's game. Holding Bobbi steady as she caught her breath, Sandy looked around The Oasis with a falling bemused smile.
Bobbi and Sandy look at each other for a second or three and this time its Sandy's turn to change color. "You know I
do have Emily living with me on the Farm now." Bobbi says quizzically. Sandy looks slightly away.
"Oh! Isn't that a happy coincidence, me visiting you on the farm and Emily is there," Sandy replies looking back at Bobbi with the mother of all side-eyes and what appears to be a naughty smile. "However could that have
slipped my mind, you having Emilys on your farm there." Sandy's eyebrows raise, "do you know those are
just my favorite." In a split second, Sandy composes herself a bit more formally to say, "Do I have anything in my store that you... require?" Bobbi selects the Shirt du Jour and as she turns to leave, Sandy beams, "this has been a wonderful visit, please come back soon sweetie!" Outside The Oasis, Bobbi is now thoroughly confused and finds a place to sit and ponder life, friends, fate, and being more than friends.
Back at the farm, Bobbi notices it's time to harvest and replant the Pumpkins and fill the Preserves jars, which is something she always does first thing in the morning. Now downgraded to
almost-always. She putters unfocused around Ginger and has no idea what happens the rest of the day but is back in the house by 9:40pm to see how Emily's doing but can't find her. Stupid house is too big and too cluttered. I need to cleverly reorganize this mess so Emms doesn't have any hiding places. At 10:20 she finds Emily in bed, the tricksy hobbit.
Except that's
me with the shortness and the big feet. And excessive Cheez eating when in Skull Cavern. Bobbi didn't really need anything else from the Cavern by now, it was really just an excuse to chow tons of cheez which Emms didn't need to know about. On occasion she would make comments about Bobbi not seeming to eat much yet still be well-padded but hey, she married me this way so it's totally just the right shape for me, right?
Bobbi goes to bed soon after, wanting the weird day to be over. She gets the impression she forgot something but that was just about the most familiar feeling in Bobbi's life, like the warm embrace of an old friend. Zzzzzzzz.......
__________
The next day Emily was back to normal.
"I also planted the Pumpkins and gathered the Moss and Tree Syrup stuff and probably something from those disgusting Fish Bait things." She shivered and poked Bobbi in the chest with a soft finger. "You needed your beauty sleep." Emily gets up close to Bobbi's face, noses overlapping. She probably would have gotten closer if not for Bobbi's ubiquitous eyewear. "Hmmmmmmm...," Emily squints appraisingly, nodding "I think it worked."
Bobbi completely misses the compliment, instead considering asking Emily about yesterday and like a fool almost mentions something about Sandy. But that was Sandy just having some fun with her, right? Nah, let it wash over you and let people just be themselves for a day, eh?
"Hello, Bobbi, are you there?" Emily is waving her hands in front of Bobbi's eyes as she dispels her inner monologue. "You look like you got lost in thought and were like totally excluding me." She threw up her hands. "Now
I'm the brains of this outfit so I need to be involved in all the thinking." She reaches out to squeeze Bobbi's arms, "and you're the
brawn," now moving to squeeze her middriff, "the
muscle," jiggling Bobbi's not entirely muscly middle
, "that gets this place
moving!"
With Emily in perfect position, Bobbi gets Emily in a headlock and gives her a noogie. "Noogienoogienoogie!" A day late and a different person, but the odds are evened! Bobbi knows to let Emily go quickly because things will go south in a hurry and she'll end up hogtied or something by her stronger wife, and Bobbi makes a break for it.
"Hey get back here! I didn't even finish what was planned for that squeeze, my little teacup!" Emily makes to chase Bobbi but pulls up immediately to watch her wife zigzag among the grasses laughing, attempting to avoid the animals and eventually tripping over one of the sheep. Not finding Emily chasing, Bobbi picks herself up, not cleaning any grass or hay from her bushy blob of a hair"style" and continues about her day on the farm as if nothing happened. Emily watches from the Porch all morning, knowing it'll keep Bobbi just slightly on edge, her head turning often towards the farmhouse where her wife watches with love, appreciation, and just enough cunning and conniving to keep things interesting.
Finally Bobbi remembers the Train Crossing as it looks resplendent in the early Fall evening, moss hanging from a few branches, though more moss from the new growth will need to wait for the Green Rains 3/4 of a year from now. Oh well, will need to find something else to do 'til then...
Back home, Bobbi finds Emily in the kitchen, the silent, hiding shenanigans of yesterday seemingly a thing of the past.
Bobbi smiles in complete understanding, she could have said the same on any number of days. OK, probably
all the days. There is never a doubt in Bobbi's mind that Emily is
the one but if an errant doubt managed to squeeze in there, Emily freely sharing thoughts like this would quickly and effortlessly dispel them. What follows is their evening dance which continues to be special even after years of marriage.
