How many lightning rods?

I'm on Y1 Fall 3 putting down a decent sprinkler system of about four quality sprinklers covering 22 tiles. I have a decent supply of gold bars and iron bars along with like twelve quartz in a chest. How many lightning rods do I need to craft to have a decent supply of batteries? Also I built a barn so are cows worth the money? Should I buy heaters?

I usually aim for 20-30, but as thunderstorms are more common in summer you’ll have some time.

cows are definitely worth it, if you don’t sell it cheese is great and easy food for mining.

buy a heater for each animal building before winter, otherwise they’ll be very unhappy.

It might be best to have at least 10 lightning rods. In some storms you find you could've done with fewer, but other storms you find that all of them were and you still had crop damage. That many should give you a decent supply of batteries.

You'll need one heater per barn or coop when you reach winter. You can place it before then, but it won't pulse to show it's working until winter arrives. Cows are a constant source of revenue as they can be milked every day as adults. If just selling the milk it takes 10-12 days for them to earn back the cost of purchase, depending on quality, or about 7 days if turning the milk to cheese. After that it's all profit.

Oh damn. I don't plan on building a coop anytime soon neither a new barn so one heater should be enough. I do need to build a chesse press or two as well. 10 is a bit too much for me right now and it's gonna dry up my iron supply.

I hate using food for mining lol. I don't know why but I do want some side income apart from selling gold bars.

Make as many as you feel you can afford, and increase the number later. I don't always make them all at once. 10 does give me a stack of spare batteries, but having a stack of items that sell for 500G each isn't all that bad.

That's a lot of money lol. But I feel like I can spare about five.

Generally above 20-30 keeps the farm close to guaranteed safe, while not wasting resources (as due to the way lighting strikes work, you're less likely to get higher numbers of 'powered' lightning rods past a certain number and it just gets less and less likely).

the cheese is a solid item for cave diving, and highly recommended by the stardew community, but my question is this: what are you using to heal while you're doing your mine runs?

I don't use anything specifically for the mines or plan that much. I just eat whatever I get in the mines like cave carrots and such.

That's a LOT of rods. Well I guess I can worry about putting down that on Y2.

Putting down even one or two lightning rods in summer is better than not having any at all. They do help protect your crops from lightning strikes as well as producing batteries. I usually start with two or three or whatever I can make right away, then add more over time as I get the materials to spare. For any equipment, there's no need to make a huge number immediately, just start with whatever you can manage and then add more as needed. You don't have to fill up your barn or coop immediately either. Animals help a lot with farming XP as well as providing income, so they're worth having.

I have my barn full now. Making about 900G a day so that's good money lol I can buy a coffee for Harvey everyday. I should definitely get my butt up and do some foraging to level up and build a few lighting rods.
