So, new save file, new challenge: "a pox on both your houses" - the farmer Schmookie doesn't buy anything from either Pierre or Joja. He's going the CC route because buying a Joja membership fails the challenge. Initial turnip box, wild seeds, Pig Lady (he should have bought that blueberry seed from her) and Sandy are all acceptable vendors. So too with Krobus, Bluebird, and the Dwarves when they all become available.

The effect? Very slow progress on farming, but the delight of surprise when you see what comes up.

He's got the bus and minecarts running, has yet to bottom out in the local mine. We are in the second week of Fall 1 right now. Legendary Fish Roe (Crimson Fish, Angler, so far) is becoming a strong income stream.

His life is modest. No kitchen, subsists on forage mostly. Has his eyes on Maru.

A fun idea! The long-term trickiness I would see if that you can never get a bouquet or a few recipes. Maybe allow an exception if Pierre is at the resort so you can sneak in when nobody can see you? Or an exception if you are wearing a disguise (use the shrine of illusions to significantly change your appearance and name, shop, change back)?

Mostly it's the seeds I'm concerned about, and their downstream products (Sugar, Vinegar, Flour, Milled Rice).

Oooh, the Bouquet. Might need to make an exception for that one too.

Clint's allowed. It's about the feud between Pierre and Joja, and not adding fuel to that fire.

I tried something similar (no buying seeds except where they are random) once and I think I had to allow the night market at some point to finish the CC.
And I bought vinegar because I could not make it, but the rest of the processed stuff is not that hard to get.

It'll definitely make certain otherwise underwhelming seed drops feel pretty great, like when you receive a random 15 tomato seeds from a skull cavern treasure chest

The night market will make Y2 much easier than Y1. I'm pretty sure the seed vendor there is the bluebird trader.

Yes, vinegar made from rice is a 1.6 addition I think. It wasn’t possible to make vinegar in the 1.4 version.

I always felt like the backpacks are only sort of sold by Pierre. They're set up on their own little counter. You can't even buy them at the main register.

Sometimes stores by me will let a separate vender set up a little table inside the store. That's what the backpacks at Pierre's feels like.

Many no-vendor challenges use Mixed Seeds to generate your initial crops of every season. Perhaps that might work for you?

Just make sure you use milled rice. Unmilled rice turns into pickles.
