Static backpack rows regardless of current active toolbar

hi, new player here and something that i still haven't gotten used to is how the backpack rows (the one that pops up when you open the menu or interact with Chests) rearrange themselves depending on what your current active toolbar (the one on the bottom or top sometimes during regular play) is. as someone who has a bit of an OCD and likes to have items in a certain order, this messes me up all the time

is this a common design with games with heavy item management?

am i the only one who'd prefer the backpack rows to not move around? lol

Things in your backpack shouldn't move from the slot you place them, unless you press the 'auto-sort' icon. Are you on pc? (It's the only version I'm familiar with, so I'm not sure if anything's different on mobile or console - maybe there's a control shortcut triggering..) I like things in a certain order too, so this would definitely be annoying.

oops, maybe i wasn't too clear, but the contents of the backpack aren't moving around, it's the rows themselves

so depending on what your current active row is, it'll be the top row when you open a Chest for example

Aaah, I'm with you now.

Still odd though, I'm pretty sure I've not experienced it - unless I'm having a major brainfart (which is possible, lol) I've had a poke about on the wiki - here. The only thing that sounds similar is that holding down tab will scroll next available row to the top...?

hm, i play on the Switch so i use the shoulder buttons to scroll through rows, but it hasn't crossed my mind to try that while i have a Chest open

Pretty sure this is an intended feature; your active row is considered to be the row you want to be using, so it will be on top when you open a chest or other storage.

yea, i was thinking that this might be the case, it's just a me thing after all lol

it's just that i toggle between the rows all the time, but when i take something out from a Chest, i prefer it to be in the first empty space from my main row

It isn't just you. I also prefer to have my main row on top when I open inventory. Having to switch it every time gets tedious, but not too time consuming. Still, yeah..

A possible solution would be the ability to select the main row like you select the main screen, or Homescreen, on a mobile phone. That way, no matter which row you are actively using at the moment, the main row will appear at top of inventory or chest, followed by the next in the cycle.
