I made a guide almost three years ago about non-manip clay farming that's all of a sudden more relevant than ever:

It uses some later game items though the same principles apply at any point in the game, mines soil has better clay rates than regular soil, so go up and down whatever floor works easiest for you and till till till. If you have access to them, you can get 2x or even more clay by bombing the large circular dirt floors, though it's far more expensive.

You also have the option of treasure totems or the dig site on ginger island which replenishes continuously, though both are locked behind a fair bit of playtime.

I have a more basic question: Do you need many silos? I mean, if your goal is to make them into a terrific pattern, then don't let me stop you. But you can get by with one silo and many critters with a few strategies. The real problem isn't the silos, it's having enough hay. So, how to get enough hay? One way is to plant wheat: when you harvest it, you'll have a chance to get some hay. Plant enough, and that adds up. You can stick this hay into a chest until you need it - leaving more room in the silos you have. You can also buy Hay from Marne (if you have the spare cash), get it as a gift from Marne if you're friendly enough, and it might show up at some festivals. But also if you let your animals outside, they'll eat grass and you won't even need the hay (except during winter or rainy days). And of course there's nothing stopping you (if you haven't fully upgraded your coop/barn) from pulling out more hay from your hopper than you need at the moment. You can then stick it into a chest, harvest more grass, and so one silo can provide enough hay for lots of animals.

I wanted to say Hoe-ing Artifact Nodes, but it wasn't a choice...

Since that is out of the equation, Hoe-ing down in sunless, moist, Mines soil, is the second best option!

SPOILER:

When you reach the Digsite at Ginger island, there you can mine the Clay nodes that regularly spawn!

P.S. Those wondering why OP needs clay; it is a mandatory ingredient in both many and key crafts, such as Garden Pots, Retaining Soils, Dehydrators etc.

Concerned Ape should consider adding clay as a purchasable item in Stardew Valley. Robin's shop would be the most logical location to sell it, given that it's already a primary source for crafting materials like wood and stone. This would streamline the crafting process by making clay readily available alongside other essential building blocks

Aside from the clay issue, you don't really need a lot of silos. You can empty silos from the hopper inside the barn, store the hay in a chest, and refill the silo with harvested hay. Or just buy hay and store it in a chest. If you have autofeeders, a cherry bomb by the trough will open up a space and then you can remove hay from the hopper again to empty the silo. I find two silos is optimum for me, just for the convenience of not having to check them frequently and keep filling them up, but strictly speaking you only need one.

When you unlock ginger island's digsite... Just keep cleaning it from everything else, except Clay nodes! After 4-5 days, just gather them all at once! Next week come, rinse and repeat!

You are going to be overflowing with clay! More than enough to fill 2x big shed with garden pots + deluxe retaining soil and 1x big shed full of dehydrators!

True, if you get hay out of the hopper and put some on the feeding bed thing the rest will go back in the silo. :hmph:
