Hay can't auto be put in silo and can be caught when there's no silo and silo is full. Add a entrance for hay to silo.

You can add hay to a silo by walking up to it with a stack of hay.
To remove hay from the silo, you need to use the hopper in a coop or barn when the feeding trough is not full. Stand next to the hopper with a tool in your hand, or you'll just put the hay you took out back into the silo. If you have auto-fill (upgraded to deluxe), you can remove some hay from the feeding trough with a bomb.
When I have a lot of extra grass and my silo is already full, I remove the hay and put it into a chest, then cut more grass to refill the silo. The chest can store much more hay than a silo.
It would be nice if it were easier to cut and store hay. Unfortunately, most people do not focus on raising animals, so it is not a priority for the developer.

That's the way I do it too.
I would like to see an upgrade for Silos in he later game. It seems strange that chests can store more than a silo.
I am not sure if that's right. CA did a lot for game features all around raising animals.

Oh, yes, the latest update has a lot of great features for your animals. I was just pointing out how as most people focus on crops, a little thing like how the hay is stored tends to get overlooked. Since the current system works, despite being clunky, there is little incentive to improve it.
It would be nice if silos could be upgraded to hold more. I just don't think it's going to happen.

I have only deluxe barn so I can't remove hay from silo. In the late fall, I need to get more hay for winter. But I can't put it in backpack so I have to build more silo.

You can destroy hat on the feeding bench with a bomb, then empty the hopper.

Even I need to use a bomb. And I can get only 12 hay one click.

Equip a tool instead of an empty slot on your inventory, and you can withdraw as much hay as you want.

Yes, this is a workaround, not a perfect solution.
Unless you’re on mobile, you can withdraw more than 12 at once if you hold down the button instead of pushing repeatedly. Another slot in the inventory needs to be selected for this to work, otherwise you just move it back and forth.
